Vintage 'Carmen' Frosted Fruit Divided Glass Serving Platter — 13" Crystal Relish Tray

Circa 1970s–1980s

Carmen Frosted-Fruit Crystal

The frosted-fruit design collectors know as "Carmen" was made by Walther-Glas of Germany and sold across the United States under the Walther by Mikasa name through the 1970s and 1980s. Raised grapes, pears, apples, and cherries sit in satin relief against clear pressed crystal, each fruit hand-touched with soft translucent color. The divided form was built for entertaining — a center well ringed by compartments for olives, nuts, sweets, and dips.

This 13-inch platter came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate — a home that kept a place ready at the table for whoever happened to arrive, where setting out a good spread was its own quiet form of welcome. It is the kind of serving piece that saw holidays and Sunday afternoons, and it is ready for many more.

Materials Clear pressed crystal with satin-frosted fruit in relief, each hand-accented with translucent color; scalloped rim; divided serving form.
Care Hand-wash in warm, soapy water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid the dishwasher and sudden temperature changes, which can dull the frosted fruit and stress the glass.

Set this one down and the table looks like it's expecting people. A full thirteen inches across, it's a round of clear pressed crystal divided into serving compartments and encircled by a garland of frosted fruit — grapes in soft violet, pears and apples in warm amber and gold, and a bunch of cherries in deep translucent red. Hold it to the light and the fruit glows; the frosting gives each piece a satin softness while the clear glass around it stays bright and sparkling. The design is the pattern collectors call "Carmen" — a Walther-Glas of Germany design sold across the United States under the Walther by Mikasa name through the 1970s and 1980s. Carmen is prized for exactly this effect: raised fruit in relief, hand-touched with translucent color over crystal-clear glass. The divided form makes it a natural party server — olives and nuts, crudités and dip, sweets and cheeses, each in its own tidy well around the center. It came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate — a home that kept a place ready at the table for whoever happened to arrive, where a good spread was its own kind of welcome. A serving platter like this one earns its keep at holidays and Sunday afternoons alike.
