Vintage Crystal / Glass Very Good

A frosted angel keeps watch on the front of this clear pressed-glass hand bell — a soft, cameo-like silhouette, robed and winged, set against glass that catches the light like the real thing. Give the handle a turn and it still rings, clear and true, thanks to a glass-ball clapper that's present and intact (the one thing these bells so often lose). It stands 9 inches tall on a 4-inch base, with a faceted handle rising to a starburst finial and a pressed daisy-and-vine pattern running the length of the body. A quiet piece of Christmas, and worth getting a jump on the season.
  • Frosted angel panel: satin-etched, cameo-like silhouette on a clear oval reserve
  • Rings true: glass-ball clapper present and intact on a twisted-wire hanger
  • Crystal-clear pressed glass: crisp daisy-and-button, scrolled reserves, lily-of-the-valley vine, sawtooth rim
  • Size: 9 inches high, 4 inches across the base
Condition: Crisp pressed pattern and a clean frosted figure, clapper present and intact, no chips or cracks noted; light wear consistent with age. A very good, display-ready bell that still rings.

Vintage Frosted Angel Pressed-Glass Hand Bell — 9" Crystal-Clear Dinner Bell with Intact Clapper

Vintage

Holiday Pressed-Glass Bell

This bell comes from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate — a household that measured the turning of the year by a small handful of beloved objects, the kind that live in a cupboard eleven months out of twelve and come out when the weather turns and the calendar says it's finally time. This angel was one of them. Every December it found its way back to the mantel, or to the center of the table, and stayed there through the season like it had always belonged.

You can picture the ritual easily enough. The box comes down, the paper comes off, and there's the same clear ring you remember from last year and the year before that — a small, bright sound that means the season has actually arrived. That's the quiet magic of a piece like this. It isn't grand, and it was never meant to be. It's the thing a family reaches for out of habit and affection, year after year, until the reaching becomes part of the season itself. Now it's looking for the next mantel, the next table, the next December. Bring it out when the weather turns, give the handle a turn, and let it start the tradition over again.

Materials Clear pressed glass with a frosted, satin-etched angel panel and a suspended glass-ball clapper on a twisted-wire hanger.
Care Hand-wash only in warm water with a soft cloth. Skip the dishwasher and any abrasives, which dull frosted glass. Support the bell and its clapper gently while cleaning, and dry by hand.

Some objects only come out once a year, and that's exactly what makes them worth keeping. This clear pressed-glass hand bell is one of those — a frosted angel on the front, robed and winged and shown in gentle profile, rendered as a soft satin-etched silhouette against glass so clear it reads like crystal. It's a cameo effect, the matte figure floating on a clear oval reserve, and it catches the eye without ever shouting. The bell has the traditional dinner-bell shape: a tall faceted handle that rises to a cut starburst finial at the top, flaring down into a bell-shaped body. The pressed pattern does a lot of quiet work — a daisy-and-button band across the shoulder, scrolled reserves framing the angel, a lily-of-the-valley vine trailing low, and a scalloped sawtooth edge at the base. The glass is crisp and brilliant, with real sparkle where the facets catch a lamp. It stands 9 inches high on a 4-inch base, a proper hand's-worth of glass. And here's the part that matters most: it still rings. The glass-ball clapper is present and intact, hanging on its twisted-wire hanger inside the bell — which is exactly the piece these so often go missing. Give the handle a turn and you get a clear, bright note, the same one that once meant supper was ready or the season had turned. We're bringing it out in July on purpose. Christmas has a way of arriving faster than we expect, and a bell like this is a fine head start.
