Vintage handcraft (undated) Art Glass Very Good
HOXM-VR-0025
A little stained glass Nativity, built to stand on its own two feet — or rather, on its own soldered glass base. The front panel carries the Holy Family, the back is plain white opalescent, and the two meet at a peaked cathedral-window arch like a tiny tent pitched over Bethlehem. Mary kneels in cobalt blue, Joseph stands in green with his shepherd's crook, and the Christ child glows amber in the manger between them. Set it where the light can find it and the whole scene lights up.
  • Handmade stained glass in the copper-foil and solder tradition — one of a kind, unsigned artisan work
  • Freestanding A-frame form: Nativity front panel, white opalescent back, joined at a pointed Gothic peak on a soldered glass base
  • The scene: cobalt-robed Mary, green-robed Joseph, and a glowing amber cabochon for the Christ child; three faceted amber jewels for the faces
  • Glows when backlit — the pink-and-white opalescent sky comes alive near a candle or a sunny windowsill
  • Small and shelf-friendly at 3.5" tall — windowsill, mantel, or curio shelf
  • From a North Carolina estate we recently brought in
Condition: Very Good. All glass is intact — no cracks, no chips — the seams are solid, and it stands squarely on its base. A little flux haze and gentle patina on the metal near the foot, the honest character of hand-soldered glass. It displays beautifully.

Handcrafted Stained Glass Nativity — Freestanding Holy Family, 3.5" Cathedral-Window Form

Vintage handcraft (undated)

Handcrafted Stained Glass Nativity

This little Nativity came to us from a North Carolina estate — one of those handmade things that turns up in a well-loved home and stops you for a moment. It is stained glass in the old copper-foil-and-solder tradition, each piece of colored glass cut, wrapped, and joined by hand. Rather than a flat suncatcher, someone built it to stand: a Nativity front and a plain opalescent back rise to a pointed cathedral-window peak, resting on a soldered glass base so it holds its own on a shelf or sill.

The scene is the Holy Family — Mary kneeling in cobalt, Joseph standing in green with a shepherd's crook, and the Christ child glowing amber between them. It is unsigned, as handmade glass so often is: one maker, one pair of hands, no other exactly like it. Small at 3.5 inches, it reads quietly by day and comes alive when backlit near a candle or a bright window.

Materials Hand-cut stained glass in the copper-foil and solder tradition, with faceted amber glass jewels and an amber cabochon Christ child, on a soldered glass base.
Care Dust with a dry, soft cloth; wipe the glass with a barely damp cloth when needed. Avoid harsh cleaners and knocks. Let light do the rest.

Some Nativity scenes you set out. This one you set out and place near a light, because that's when it earns its keep. It's stained glass in the old copper-foil-and-solder way — each piece of colored glass wrapped, laid, and soldered by hand — and someone built it not as a flat panel but as a standing thing. A Nativity front and a plain white opalescent back rise to meet at a pointed peak, an A-frame like a small tent, all resting on a soldered glass base so it holds its own on a shelf without a stand or a prop. The silhouette is a Gothic cathedral window, an arch climbing to a point. Inside it, the Holy Family: Mary kneeling in a robe of deep cobalt, Joseph standing beside her in green with a shepherd's crook, and between them the Christ child rendered as a single amber cabochon that seems to hold a small flame. The three faces are round faceted amber jewels, and they do exactly what faceted glass does — they catch whatever light is going and hand it back. Behind the figures, the sky is a soft opalescent glass of white and pink that reads quietly by day and glows when you backlight it. A candle nearby, a bright windowsill, and the color wakes up. It's unsigned — no maker's mark, no studio name — which is usually the story with handmade glass like this. One person, one pair of hands, one piece that came out this way and no other exactly like it. It came to us from a North Carolina estate, and it's small enough at 3.5" to tuck into a curio shelf and big enough in feeling to carry a mantel through the season.
