1990s Art Glass, Enamel / Painted Excellent
HDRG-VR-0006

A round globe of frosted crackle glass, hand-painted the whole way around with a spring garden in bloom — pink and ruby tulips leaning on slender green stems, a hummingbird caught mid-hover at the petals, and a butterfly resting on the far curve. The crackle runs through the glass itself, so the bowl catches and scatters light like frost on a windowpane while the painted flowers glow warm against it. Every stroke was laid down by hand, so this one is the only one exactly like it.

  • Form — spherical open rose bowl, ~10" diameter
  • Technique — clear crackle ("ice") glass with hand-painted enamel decoration
  • Motif — pink and ruby tulips, a hummingbird, and a butterfly, wrapping the full circumference
  • Palette — rose pink, ruby red, soft green on frosted clear glass
  • Origin — from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate
  • Condition — Excellent; painted decoration bright and complete, crackle glass clear and sparkling, ready to fill or display as is

Hand-Painted Crackle Glass Rose Bowl — 10" Tulips, Hummingbird & Butterfly

Circa 1990s

Hand-Painted Art Glass

A round globe of frosted crackle "ice" glass, hand-painted the whole way around with a spring garden — pink and ruby tulips on slender green stems, a hummingbird caught mid-hover, and a butterfly at rest on the far curve. The crackle runs through the glass itself, so the bowl scatters light while the painted flowers glow warm against it. Every stroke laid down by hand.

It came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, kept by an avid gardener with a soft spot for anything in bloom — one of a small group of hand-painted art glass from the same collection.

Materials Clear crackle ("ice") glass with hand-painted enamel floral decoration.
Care Dust with a soft, dry cloth, or wash gently by hand in cool water. Avoid abrasives and the dishwasher, which can dull the painted enamel, and keep it clear of hard knocks.

Fill it with roses, float a candle in it, or leave it empty on a sunny sill — this hand-painted crackle glass bowl was made to be looked at from every side. The body is a full round globe of clear crackle glass, its surface veined with the fine fractures that give "ice glass" its name, so that even before you notice the painting the whole thing glitters when light moves across it.

Then there's the garden. Painted freehand around the bowl are tulips in rose pink and deep ruby, standing on slender green stems, with a hummingbird hovering in to sip and a butterfly at rest on the opposite curve. The enamels sit bright and opaque against the frosted glass, and because every flower and feather was brushed on by hand, no two of these bowls are ever quite the same.
