Vintage KMD Daalderop Royal Holland Pewter Lidded Ewer — Mid-Century Dutch, Acorn Finial

Mid-Century, c. 1955–1975

Old World Dutch Pewter

Made by KMD — Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek Daalderop — of Tiel, Netherlands. Founded in 1880, Daalderop earned the Koninklijke (Royal) designation from the Dutch crown and became the most widely exported Dutch pewter house of the twentieth century. The 'KMD Royal Holland Pewter' trademark was formally registered in 1964 and remained in active use into the 1980s.

The form deliberately echoes traditional Dutch pewter of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the Netherlands stood among Europe's foremost pewter-producing nations. Daalderop's mid-century revival pieces — designed under craftsman Jan van Woudenberg — were made for serious domestic use and for export, and they remain the entry point for most collectors of post-war Dutch decorative arts. It came to us from a third-generation Italian-American family on Long Island, where it had long been kept among a treasured collection of pewter — pieces carried across the Atlantic by the family's grandparents and held close through the generations since.

Materials Cast pewter throughout, with hinged lid, turned acorn finial, and impressed maker's cartouche on the underside.
Care Dust with a soft dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive polishes and dishwashers; pewter is a soft alloy and prefers a gentle hand.

There is a quiet authority to a piece of well-made Dutch pewter, and this lidded ewer carries it beautifully. The pear-shaped body rises into a ringed neck and a generous funnel mouth, and the hinged lid is crowned with a turned acorn finial — a motif Dutch pewterers have favored since the seventeenth century. The strap handle is plain and confident; the stepped foot anchors the form. It is, in a word, satisfying. The mark on the underside is unambiguous: a crowned heraldic shield bearing the letters K, M, D, the name Daalderop beneath, “Royal Holland Pewter” running the rim, and “Made in Holland” impressed below. That is the full export cartouche of Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek Daalderop — KMD — the Tiel-based firm founded in 1880 that became the most recognizable Dutch pewter house of the twentieth century.

About the Maker

Daalderop was awarded the Koninklijke (Royal) designation by the Dutch crown in recognition of its standing among the country’s metalworkers. By the mid-twentieth century the firm had become a leading exporter of decorative pewterware, with a peak production period from roughly the mid-1950s through the 1970s under designer-craftsman Jan van Woudenberg. The "KMD Royal Holland Pewter" trademark was formally registered in 1964 and remained in active use until the late 1980s. Pieces from this era reach into the American and British markets in real numbers, and they remain the entry point for most collectors of post-war Dutch decorative arts.

Form & Detail

  • Body: Pear-shaped baluster with stepped circular foot
  • Neck: Tall, with a pair of crisp turned bands above the shoulder
  • Mouth: Wide, round funnel-form with a flared lip
  • Lid: Hinged, with a turned acorn finial above the thumb-piece
  • Handle: Plain pewter strap, hinge-mounted at the rim
  • Mark: Full KMD / Daalderop crowned cartouche, "Royal Holland Pewter," "Made in Holland," impressed clearly on the underside

Dating

The mark format and casting quality place this comfortably in the mid-twentieth century — most likely between roughly 1955 and 1975, and possibly earlier. Genuinely vintage at fifty to seventy years of age, but not antique. The form deliberately echoes earlier Dutch pewter traditions; this is KMD's continuation of a centuries-old vocabulary, not a reproduction.

Condition

Very Good. The piece displays a soft, even pewter sheen with the light, naturally settled darkening that one expects of a well-kept piece of mid-century pewter. No cracks, splits, or dents. The hinged lid mechanism is intact and operates cleanly. Some fine surface scratching consistent with careful domestic use over the decades. The maker's mark on the underside is fully legible. Ready to display as it is.
