Antique W.H. Grindley Covered Muffin Dish — English Transferware with Pink Roses & Gilt, Circa 1914–1925
Circa 1914–1925
Edwardian English Transferware
The Edwardian breakfast table ran on small ceremonies, and a covered muffin dish was one of them. Warm bread — toast, muffins, crumpets — came to the table under a tall domed lid, and someone lifted that cover at just the right moment. This is one of those servers: a round dome with a gilded ring finial on a matching underplate, made by W.H. Grindley & Co. of Tunstall, in the Staffordshire Potteries. Grindley, founded in 1880, turned out durable, handsome tableware for English and export homes by the trainload, and this piece carries the confident, restrained look of its day — an ochre-and-gilt laurel chain circling the border, black cartouche panels cradling pink roses, gilt ribbon flourishes trailing from the finial, and plenty of plain white left to let it all breathe.
The green laurel-wreath mark on the underside reads "W.H. Grindley & Co England," the form the company used from about 1914 to 1925. That puts this dish in the late Edwardian and early George V years — old enough to have seen a good many breakfasts. It came out of an estate near Woodbridge, Virginia, the kind of household where a piece like this stays put through decades of ordinary mornings. It survived them all, and it's ready for another table, whether that means warm bread on a Sunday or a spot on the sideboard where it can simply be admired.
