This one's by Libbey, American-made, with a domed cobalt lid that nests right into the neck. Fill it with peppermints, chocolate kisses, or candy canes and set it where the winter light can find it. The color does the rest.

  • Era: circa 1990s
  • Material: American pressed glass

Libbey Cobalt Blue Snowflake Canister Jar with Domed Lid — 7" Vintage Holiday Apothecary Glass

Circa 1990s

Holiday Apothecary Jar

This cobalt snowflake jar came to us from a North Carolina estate — one of those pieces that clearly earned a permanent place in a family's winter. Jars like this one lived at the front of the cupboard from Thanksgiving through the New Year, brought down each December to hold peppermints, chocolate kisses, or candy canes, then tucked away again in January to wait for the next season. The snowflakes and deep winter-sky blue make it unmistakably a holiday keeper.

Libbey, whose sticker still marks the base, is one of America's oldest and best-known glassmakers, tracing its roots to the New England Glass Company of 1818 and to Toledo, Ohio, from 1888 onward. This snowflake canister belongs to a line of decorative cobalt holiday glass Libbey produced in the 1990s — American-made, mold-formed, and finished with a printed scatter of white and ice-blue snowflakes. The domed lid, pressed in the same cobalt glass, nests into the neck as a decorative closure rather than an airtight seal. That rich color and seasonal motif have made these jars quietly collectible among fans of vintage holiday kitchenware.

Materials American-made cobalt blue pressed glass with a fitted domed glass lid; the lower body carries a printed flurry of white and ice-blue snowflakes.
Care Hand-wash in warm water with mild soap; skip the dishwasher and abrasive scrubbers to keep the snowflake print bright. Lift the domed lid straight up to remove and reseat.

Some jars earn a permanent spot at the back of the cupboard, and some come out for one month a year. This is the second kind. Deep cobalt blue glass, glossy and rich, with a flurry of snowflakes drifting across the lower body in white and soft ice-blue. It's the jar that comes down every December — filled with peppermints one year, chocolates the next, candy canes when the grandkids are coming — and goes quietly back up in January to wait for its turn again. Libbey made it, right here in the U.S.A., and the sticker on the base still says so. The domed lid is clear cobalt and nests down into the neck, so the whole thing reads as one clean shape from across the room. At 7" tall it's got real presence on a countertop or a windowsill — enough that when the low winter sun catches it, the blue practically glows. Set it on a snowy windowsill with a handful of red-and-white candies inside and you've got Christmas in a single object. Fill it, empty it, refill it. That's what it was made for, and it's still very much up to the job.
