HDRH-VR-0033
A little footed bowl that knows how to hold a room's attention. A broad band of amber-gold lustre wraps the well, laced over with fine white filigree scrollwork, and at the center a full pink cabbage rose opens among orange daisies, lavender blooms, and tiny forget-me-nots. The rim is scalloped and swirl-fluted, finished with a thin gilt line. Mid-century Japanese export porcelain, made for a side table and a handful of something sweet.
  • Form: Round footed bowl on a low raised foot ring, scalloped swirl-fluted rim with a gilt edge line
  • Size: 7 inches in diameter, 2.5 inches high
  • Decoration: Amber-gold lustre band with white filigree lace scrollwork; central rose bouquet in pink, orange, lavender, and green
  • Mark: Stamped "JAPAN" in red on the underside (country of origin; no maker's name)
  • Era: Mid-century, 1940s–1960s Japanese export porcelain
  • Material: Porcelain with hand-applied lustre and gilt accents
Condition: Very Good. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The amber band shows the soft tonal shift natural to a hand-applied lustre finish, and a whisper of gentle wear touches the gilt rim — the honest patina of a piece that's been admired. It displays beautifully.

Vintage Japanese Porcelain Footed Bowl — Amber Gold Lustre Band with Rose Bouquet, 7"

Mid-Century, 1940s–1960s

Mid-Century Japanese Export Porcelain

This footed bowl comes from the estate of a longtime Northeast collector whose belongings eventually settled in North Carolina — someone with a steady eye for the small, well-made things that make a home feel gathered. It belongs to the great wave of mid-century Japanese export porcelain that filled American department-store china aisles and gift counters from the 1940s through the 1960s, pieces prized for their glowing lustre glazes and pretty painted centers.

The decorating tradition is on full display here: a broad amber-gold lustre band laced with fine white filigree scrollwork, framing a hand-styled bouquet led by a pink cabbage rose. The underside is stamped simply "JAPAN" in red — country of origin, with no maker's name, exactly as these export wares were marked. A bowl like this was made for a side table, holding candies, nuts, or a day's small treasures, and it plays that role as gracefully now as it did then.

Materials Porcelain with a hand-applied amber lustre band, white filigree lace overlay, central floral transfer, and a gilt-trimmed scalloped rim.
Care Hand-wash only in cool water with mild soap and dry promptly. Avoid the dishwasher, microwave, and abrasive pads, which dull lustre and gilt. Best enjoyed as a display or dry-catch piece.

There was a stretch of the last century when a certain kind of pretty little bowl turned up everywhere — the china aisle of the department store, the gift counter near the register, the shelf you stopped at without meaning to. This is one of them, and it's a good one. Mid-century Japanese export porcelain, the sort that came home wrapped in tissue and earned a permanent spot on a side table. The decoration is the whole story. A broad band of amber-gold lustre encircles the well, glowing warm against the creamy ground, and over it runs a lace of white filigree scrollwork — that chintz-like, all-over foliate pattern the Japanese potteries did so well in these years. At the center sits a hand-styled bouquet: a full pink cabbage rose surrounded by orange daisies, soft lavender and purple blooms, tiny forget-me-nots, and a scatter of green leaves. The rim is scalloped and swirl-fluted, spiraling out from the center, and finished with a thin gold line that catches the light as you turn it. The underside carries a red "JAPAN" stamp — country of origin, no maker's name, which is exactly what you'd expect from an export piece of this period. A bowl like this never had one job. It held candies or nuts, a few wrapped chocolates, the odd earring set down at the end of the day, or nothing at all — just sat there being lovely on a table by the window. It came to us from the estate of a longtime Northeast collector whose things eventually settled in North Carolina, someone who clearly had an eye for the small, well-made pieces that make a home feel gathered rather than furnished. At 7 inches across, it's the right size to earn its keep and still get noticed.
