Vintage Figural Snowman Christmas Candle — Green Holly Top Hat, Striped Scarf, Never Lit

Circa 1980s–1990s

Figural Christmas Candle

Figural candles like this cheerful snowman were a staple of American Christmas decorating from the 1980s into the 1990s — molded, hand-painted, and set out on mantels and sideboards far more often than they were ever burned. This one has all the classic charm: a rounded snowman in creamy white wax, a jaunty green top hat trimmed in red and finished with a sprig of holly, a striped scarf in blue, green, and red, and two little red mittens. His carrot nose, coal smile, and rosy cheeks give him a face that's hard not to smile back at.

This snowman came to us from an estate in Louisburg, North Carolina, part of a small group of Christmas candles kept and enjoyed over many holidays. He was never lit — the wax-dipped wick at the top of his hat is intact and pristine — which is exactly how these figural candles were meant to be treasured: as seasonal decoration, not something to burn down. Bright, whole, and full of vintage holiday personality, he's ready for another mantel and many more Decembers.

Materials Molded paraffin wax, hand-painted in the round, with an original wax-dipped wick. Creamy white body with green, red, and blue holiday detailing.
Care Display only. Keep out of direct sun and away from heat to protect the shape and colors. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Best enjoyed unlit, as decor.

Some Christmas decorations are meant to be lit, and some are meant to be loved right where they sit. This little snowman candle belongs firmly in the second group. He's molded in creamy white wax and hand-painted in cheerful detail — a jaunty green top hat trimmed with a red band and a sprig of holly, a cozy scarf striped in blue, green, and red, and a pair of bright red mittens. His carrot nose, coal-dot smile, and rosy cheeks add up to a face it's hard not to smile back at. At about 4 inches tall, he's just the right size for a mantel, a windowsill, a bookshelf, or a holiday tablescape. Figural candles like this were a beloved part of American Christmas decorating from the 1980s into the 1990s — turned out in charming novelty shapes and, more often than not, set out year after year rather than ever burned. This one stayed true to that tradition: the wax-dipped wick at the top of his hat has never been lit. He came to us from an estate in Louisburg, North Carolina, one of a small gathering of vintage Christmas candles kept and set out season after season.
