Vintage Blue & White Praying Hands Wall Plate — 8" Hanging Devotional Transferware

Later 20th century

Devotional Blue & White Transferware

This little plate came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, out of a home where faith was part of the daily furniture rather than a Sunday occasion. The image is one nearly everyone knows on sight — two hands pressed palm to palm, cuffed at the wrists, fingers together and still. It's the pose after Dürer's "Praying Hands," set here in white reserve against a soft pale-blue ground, with cobalt dogwood blossoms and buds framing it in a deep, steady blue. Blue and white has always carried a quiet kind of reverence, and this piece leans into it without ever raising its voice.

There's no maker's mark on the back, so we won't put a name to it, but the decorative-use stamp places it in the later 20th century — a small sacred object made to be seen and lived alongside. The best part is how it was meant to hang, and still does: two holes drilled into the reverse foot ring, with a dark cord run through with a fine gilt thread already threaded and waiting. It hung on someone's wall for years, a small daily reminder in a room where the light came and went, and it kept its color and its gloss through all of it. Now it's ready for a new nail and a quiet corner — the kind of modest, sincere piece that asks for nothing and settles in like it's always been there.

Materials Transfer-printed ceramic with a glossy glaze, cobalt-blue decoration on white. Reverse foot ring drilled to hang, with a dark gilt-threaded hanging cord in place.
Care Marked not for food use — display only. Dust or wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth; never the dishwasher. Hang on a secure nail using the cord provided.

Some objects earn their place on a wall not by being grand, but by being kept. This is one of those — a small blue-and-white plate that hung in a home where faith wasn't a Sunday thing but a part of the furniture. Two hands pressed palm to palm, cuffed sleeves at the wrist, fingers together and steady. Anyone who's seen it knows the pose: it's after Dürer's "Praying Hands," rendered here in clean white reserve against a soft pale-blue ground. Around the hands, cobalt blossoms and buds — dogwood-like, with the flowers open and the leaves rendered in a deep, confident blue. It's transfer-printed, just under 8 inches across, and the whole thing carries that quiet blue-and-white register that reads as devotion without ever raising its voice. There's no maker's mark on the back, and we won't guess at one. The reverse is stamped for decorative use only, which places it in the later 20th century — the kind of small sacred piece made to be seen and lived alongside, not set at the dinner table. Best of all, it was made to hang and it still is. Two holes sit in the reverse foot ring, and the dark hanging cord — run through with a fine gilt thread that catches the light — is already threaded and waiting. It comes to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, and it comes to you ready for a nail and a quiet corner. "The best things in life are not things," goes the old line — but a thing that held someone's faith for years is a thing worth keeping. Details
