A matched pair of Tachikichi yunomi — the tall, handleless Japanese teacups meant to be cradled in both hands. The cobalt-blue ground carries soft horizontal banding, and over it drifts a white bamboo-leaf pattern, loose and unhurried, the way the best of these things always are. A slender gold rim finishes each cup at the lip. Turn one over and you'll find the Tachikichi mark hand-brushed in blue on the base — the same Kyoto house that's been making fine porcelain since 1752.
  • Form: Yunomi — the classic tall, handleless Japanese teacup, sold as a set of two
  • Maker: Tachikichi (橘吉) of Kyoto, mark hand-brushed in underglaze cobalt on each base
  • Decoration: Cobalt-blue ground with soft horizontal banding and a cascading white bamboo-leaf pattern
  • Rim: Slender gold rim at the lip; clean white interiors
  • Size: Each about 3.25 in / 8.3 cm tall and 2.5 in / 6.4 cm across the rim (approximate)
Condition: Both cups are bright and sound — glossy glaze, crisp decoration, clean white interiors, no chips, no cracks, no repairs. The gold rims keep their warm glow, with only the faintest softening in a spot or two from gentle use. Genuinely lovely, ready to pour into today.

Tachikichi Japanese Porcelain Teacups, Pair — Cobalt Blue & White Bamboo-Leaf Yunomi with Gold Rim

20th Century

Japanese Kyo-yaki Porcelain (Kyoto)

These two teacups come from an estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina, and they carry the taste of the woman who gathered them. She spent a long career surrounded by fine things and came away with a discerning eye — the kind that comes from handling quality every day until you can feel it in your hands. She was an avid collector of curios, vases, figurines, pottery, and glass, the sort of person who could walk past a hundred pretty objects and stop at the one that was genuinely well made. A pair of Kyoto yunomi is exactly what an eye like that keeps.

The cups are the work of Tachikichi, a Kyoto tableware house whose heritage reaches back to 1752 — generations of practice behind fine Kyo-yaki porcelain, the tradition that made the city's ceramics worth crossing the country for. You can read that lineage in the restraint of these two: a cobalt-blue ground, a drift of white bamboo leaves, a thin line of gold at the lip, and the Tachikichi mark brushed in blue beneath each foot. Nothing overworked, nothing shouting. They are tall and handleless in the old way, made to be held in both hands while the tea cools — and they've clearly been held with care.

Materials Fine Japanese porcelain, cobalt-blue ground with white bamboo-leaf decoration and a gold-banded rim; each base bears the Tachikichi (橘吉) mark.
Care Hand-wash gently in warm water with mild soap; avoid the dishwasher, microwave, and abrasive scrubbers to protect the gold rim. Dry with a soft cloth.

Some cups ask to be held, and yunomi are built for exactly that — tall, handleless, sized to be wrapped in both palms while the tea does its slow work. This is a matched pair from Tachikichi, the Kyoto tableware house whose roots reach back to 1752. That's a long time to get good at one thing, and it shows in the small decisions: the way the cobalt-blue ground carries a soft horizontal banding, the white bamboo-leaf pattern drifting across it without a wasted line, the thin gold rim that catches the light at the lip. Look at the base of each and you'll find the Tachikichi mark (橘吉) brushed in blue by hand — legible, confident, on both. These come to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, and they suit the woman who kept them. She spent a long career surrounded by fine things and came away with the eye that comes from handling the real thing daily — a discerning gatherer of curios, vases, figurines, pottery, and glass. She knew quality when she held it, and she chose these. A pair of Kyoto yunomi is precisely the kind of quiet, well-made object a collector like that folds into a cabinet and reaches for on the right afternoon. There's no country stamp and no box, and the gilt shows the gentle softening of real use, so we won't pin them to a decade — this is a classic Japanese form, long-loved and clearly cared for. Two cups, ready for the next pot of tea.
