Mid-Century, c. 1950s–1970s
American Silverplate Tea Service
Sheridan Silver Co. of Taunton, Massachusetts produced silverplate tea and coffee services through the middle decades of the twentieth century, marketed to American households that still set a sideboard for company. EPS — electroplated silver — was their working language: a layer of fine silver applied over a base-metal body, struck "Sheridan Silver / EPS" on the underside in plain block letters. The mark on this pot is exactly that, clear and unmistakable.
This little footed pot would have travelled with a matching open creamer and lidded sugar, the three pieces sharing a tray as a Sheridan tea service of the 1950s through the 1970s. The squat bulbous body, scrolled feet with floral cartouches, lift-off domed lid, and overhead bail handle on porcelain insulator beads all point to a teapot or hot-water pot — the short integrated pour lip is the vocabulary of pots, not pitchers. By the time the company was absorbed into Taunton Silversmiths, sets like this one had already begun migrating from daily service to display, where their honest plate and sturdy hands-on shapes earned a quieter second life.
