Early 20th Century (c. 1900s–1940s) Enamel / Painted, Gilt Very Good
HDRK-VR-0051
A two-handled covered sugar bowl from Weimar Porzellan, painted on both sides with an 18th-century courting scene — a gentleman in his frock coat, a lady in her full skirt, the two of them lingering in a leafy garden. The scene is worked in soft sepia-rust and muted green against a pale sky, and it's signed Wagner in script underneath, the studio signature collectors of this Vienna-style ware know on sight. Gilt handles, a gilt egg-shaped finial, and a fine gold rim line finish it off.
  • Maker: Weimar Porzellan (Blankenhain, Thuringia, Germany) — green underglaze shield mark
  • Era: early twentieth century, likely circa 1912
  • Decoration: hand-decorated Rococo courting scene, both sides; signed Wagner
  • Body: ivory porcelain with a soft celadon band across the shoulder and lid
  • Details: gilt handles, gilt egg-shaped finial, gilt rim line
  • Size: measures 4.5 inches
Condition: Very Good. The interior is clean, the lid seats well, and there are no chips or cracks — just light wear to the gilt on the handle edges and finial tip, exactly what a century of careful use leaves behind.

Vintage Weimar Germany Porcelain Sugar Bowl — Hand-Decorated Rococo Courting Scene, Signed Wagner, c. 1912

Early 20th century, circa 1912

Rococo Courting-Scene Porcelain

Weimar Porzellan of Blankenhain, in the Thuringian porcelain country of central Germany, carried the ducal Weimar shield as its trademark for generations. This covered sugar bowl wears that green underglaze shield reading "Weimar / Germany," and a hand-painted "12" beside the decorator's signature places it around 1912, in the early years of the twentieth century.

The painted courting scene — a gentleman and his lady at leisure in a garden — belongs to the Rococo revival that European porcelain houses adored, a fond nod back to the gallant eighteenth century of Watteau and Boucher. It is signed "Wagner" in script on the underside, the studio signature found on Vienna-style decorative porcelain of this period rather than the hand of a single famous artist. The bowl came to us from an estate near Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Materials Ivory porcelain with a hand-decorated enamel courting scene, gilt handles, gilt egg-shaped finial, and a fine gilt rim line.
Care Hand-wash only in warm water with mild soap and dry promptly. Keep the gilt and painted scene away from abrasives, dishwashers, and microwaves. Display out of harsh direct sun to preserve the colors.

Some pieces are content to hold sugar. This one wants to tell you a story while it does it. On each side, a hand-painted courting scene straight out of the 18th century — a gentleman in his frock coat, a lady in her full skirt, the pair of them out walking a leafy garden with all the unhurried gallantry the Rococo did so well. It's a Watteau-esque bit of romance, painted in soft sepia-rust reds and muted greens against a pale sky. The bowl comes from Weimar Porzellan of Blankenhain, in Thuringia, and it carries the green underglaze shield mark reading "Weimar / Germany." A hand-painted "12" sits beside the decorator's signature, which points us to right around 1912. Turn it over and you'll find Wagner signed in script — the studio signature collectors of this Vienna-style decorative porcelain recognize on sight. It's the charming period detail that tells you exactly what you're holding. The form is a two-handled covered sugar bowl, ivory porcelain with a soft celadon band running across the shoulder and lid. Bright gilded handles, a gilt egg-shaped finial crowning the domed lid, and a fine gold line at the rim. It came to us from an estate near Fredericksburg, Virginia, and it has kept its looks beautifully.
