Mid-Century (1940s–1960s) Vinyl / Cloth Very Good
YAHD-VR-0002
Somebody bought this little Finnish traveler back in the 1960s and then, near as we can tell, never took her out to play. Six-odd decades later she's still standing in her box, costume bright, waiting. She's a Flagg "Authentically Costumed Nationality Doll" — about 7 inches of bendable charm from a small Massachusetts maker — dressed in a raspberry-red folk skirt, black laced bodice, and a red satin bonnet, with the box itself half the fun. The side panels still crow "Hand Painted," "Washable," "A Bending Doll," and our favorite: "We Rhumba / We Tango / We Pirouette / We Square Dance."
  • Maker: Flagg & Company, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts — confirmed by the fully marked box
  • Country: Finland, in traditional folk dress
  • Size: roughly 7 inches tall, bendable and posable
  • Details: vinyl head, rooted brown hair, blue painted eyes; red-checked cuffs and black soutache scrollwork at the hem
  • The box: original open-face two-tier display box with printed folk-dancer graphics
Condition: Near-mint. The doll is excellent and the costume vivid; the box shows light shelf wear and one small foxing spot on the plain back panel. A well-kept example, plain and simple.

Vintage Flagg "Finland" Nationality Doll — 7" Bendable Folk-Costume Doll, Mint in Original Box (Circa Mid-1960s)

Circa mid-1960s

Mid-Century Folk-Costume Doll

This is a Flagg "Authentically Costumed Nationality Doll" representing Finland — about seven inches tall, bendable at the joints, with a vinyl head, rooted brown hair, and painted blue eyes. Flagg & Company worked out of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, billing itself as "Manufacturers of Flexible Play Dolls." It was a small American outfit turning out these bendable costume dolls through the 1950s and '60s, each dressed for a different country. Half the pleasure is in the box, whose panels still carry the line's cheerful slogans — "Hand Painted," "Washable," "A Durable Doll" — and a little roll call of dances: "We Rhumba, We Tango, We Pirouette, We Square Dance."

The Finnish costume is the real charm: a red satin bonnet, a white blouse with red-checkered cuffs, a black laced bodice with cord ties, and a deep raspberry-red skirt trimmed with embroidered floral ribbon down the front and black soutache scrollwork at the hem. For a small doll from a modest maker, somebody paid attention. She came to us from a longtime collector's estate in Durham, North Carolina, from someone who clearly believed a thing worth keeping was worth keeping right — she's stood in her original box since sometime in the mid-1960s, costume bright and colors vivid. Sixty years in her box, and she never missed a dance.

Materials Vinyl head with rooted brown hair and painted blue eyes; bendable body; fabric folk costume in satin, cotton, and embroidered ribbon trim.
Care Display out of direct sunlight to keep the colors vivid, and keep her dry. Dust the costume gently. When she's resting, store her in the original box.

Here's a small pleasure that survived the decades by never leaving home. This is a Flagg "Authentically Costumed Nationality Doll" representing Finland — about seven inches tall, bendable at the joints, with a vinyl head, rooted brown hair, and painted blue eyes. She came to us from a longtime collector's estate in Durham, North Carolina, from someone who clearly believed a thing worth keeping was worth keeping right. She's been standing in her original box, near as we can tell, since sometime in the mid-1960s. Flagg & Company worked out of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts — "Manufacturers of Flexible Play Dolls," as the box end panel puts it, right down to the street address on Bismarck Street. It was a small American outfit turning out these bendable costume dolls through the 1950s and '60s, each one dressed for a different country. Half the joy is in the packaging: the side panels still carry the line's cheerful slogans — "Hand Painted," "Washable," "A Durable Doll," "Authentically Detailed Costumes" — and a little roll call of dances, "We Rhumba / We Tango / We Pirouette / We Square Dance." You don't see copywriting like that anymore. The Finnish costume is the real charm. A red satin folk bonnet, a white blouse with red-checkered cuffs, a black laced bodice with cord ties, and a deep raspberry-red skirt trimmed down the front with an embroidered floral ribbon and finished at the hem in black soutache scrollwork. White stockings, black shoes. For a seven-inch doll from a modest maker, somebody paid attention. She rests loose in the printed tray — she was never sealed under cellophane — against a pale-blue backdrop showing the other national costumes in the series. The kind of thing that makes you want to go find her sisters.
  • Maker: Flagg & Company, Inc., Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts (attribution confirmed by the fully marked box)
  • Series: Authentically Costumed Nationality Doll
  • Country / Costume: Finland — traditional folk dress
  • Height: approximately 7 inches
  • Materials: vinyl head, rooted hair, bendable body, fabric folk costume
  • Era: circa mid-1960s
  • Packaging: original open-face two-tier display box with printed folk-dancer graphics
  • Condition: near-mint boxed example — see note below
Condition: The doll is excellent — costume bright and intact, colors vivid, the hair just slightly soft and loose the way rooted hair goes with age. The box is very good: the printed faces are bright and clean with light shelf and edge wear, and there's one small brown foxing spot on the plain white back. All told, a clean, well-kept mint-in-box doll that a careful owner saved for decades.
