Practically perfect, give or take a little shelf wear. This is the 1964 stereo pressing of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins — Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the Sherman Brothers songs you already know by heart, on Buena Vista's classic sunburst label. It's a common, much-loved title rather than a rare one, and that's exactly the point: a lot of people grew up with this record spinning in the living room. Opens up to a gatefold with a film synopsis and black-and-white stills inside. Highlights & Details
  • Walt Disney's Mary Poppins Original Cast Soundtrack, stereo pressing
  • Buena Vista Records, catalog STER-4026 (also seen as BVS-4026 / ST-4026), 1964
  • Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke; music & lyrics by the Sherman Brothers; arranged and conducted by Irwin Kostal
  • Gatefold cover with synopsis and black-and-white film stills inside
  • Classic Buena Vista sunburst label
  • From a Woodbridge, Virginia estate
Condition (visual grade only — not play-tested): Cover: Good (G). There's visible water/damp staining and discoloration along the bottom edges and corners of the gatefold — brown and tan staining to the cardboard — plus general age and shelf wear. This is real damage, and we'd rather you know it up front. Disc: Very Good (VG), visually. Light surface marks and scuffs, no deep gouges, label clean. We haven't played it, so this is a look-only grade — we can't speak to surface noise.

Mary Poppins Original Soundtrack Vinyl LP — Walt Disney / Buena Vista STER-4026, 1964 Stereo Gatefold

1964

Disney Original Soundtrack LP

Walt Disney's Mary Poppins reached theaters in 1964 and became one of the studio's defining live-action musicals, sweeping a generation into a world of umbrellas, chimney sweeps, and tuppence-a-bag birds. This is the original cast soundtrack on Buena Vista Records, the stereophonic pressing (STER-4026), with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke leading a score written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman and conducted by Irwin Kostal. The gatefold opens to a film synopsis and black-and-white production stills, the kind of packaging that once made a soundtrack feel like an event.

It is a common, much-loved title rather than a rarity — pressed and sold widely because so many households wanted it. This copy came to the boutique from a Woodbridge, Virginia estate. It is offered as a record to enjoy for its nostalgia and its songs, honestly graded, rather than as a scarce collector's pressing.

Materials Vinyl phonograph record (12-inch stereo LP) in a printed gatefold cardboard cover; Buena Vista sunburst paper label.
Care Store upright away from heat, sun, and damp. Handle by the edges and label. Sleeve the disc in an inner liner; keep the gatefold dry to prevent further staining.

Some records you don't so much listen to as remember. This is one of them. Walt Disney's Mary Poppins arrived in 1964 and more or less colonized a generation of childhoods — and here's the original cast soundtrack, the stereo pressing, on Buena Vista's sunburst label. You know the cast before the needle drops. Julie Andrews, in the role that won her the Oscar, floating down with an umbrella and a carpet bag that holds considerably more than it should. Dick Van Dyke as Bert, cockney accent and all, dancing with chimney sweeps across the London rooftops. And underneath it all, the songs — written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, the brothers who could turn a nursery into an earworm. They're all here. "A Spoonful of Sugar." "Chim Chim Cher-ee," which took home the Academy Award. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," a word that has outlived most of the people who first learned to spell it. Irwin Kostal handled the arrangements and conducting, and the whole thing still holds up — bright, busy, and unembarrassed about being joyful. The cover opens to a gatefold, with a synopsis of the film printed inside alongside black-and-white stills from the production. It's the kind of packaging that made a soundtrack feel like an event, back when buying a record meant something. This one came to us from a Woodbridge, Virginia estate. It's a common title — pressed and sold by the truckload, beloved precisely because it was everywhere — so it's a record to enjoy, not a rarity to lock away. Sometimes that's the better kind to own. Condition We grade by record-collector convention, and we want to be plain about this one. These are visual grades only — the record has not been play-tested. We haven't put it on a turntable, so we can't guarantee surface noise one way or the other.
  • Cover / Sleeve: Good (G). There's visible water and damp staining along the bottom edges and corners of the gatefold — brown and tan discoloration to the cardboard — along with general age and shelf wear. This is real damage, not a trick of the light. We'd rather you see it coming than be surprised when it arrives.
  • Disc / Vinyl: Very Good (VG), visually. Light surface marks and scuffs are visible under good light. No deep gouges, and the label is clean. Again, this is a look-only assessment — we have not played the record and cannot speak to how it sounds.
