Early 20th Century (c. 1900s–1940s) Genuine long-haired rabbit fur, naturally warmed to a soft ivory, on a fabric-backed cylindrical body with a flat woven cotton twill neck cord. Good
YACL-VR-0001
A soft cylinder of genuine rabbit fur, open at both ends so a child could slip both hands in and stay warm on the walk to wherever winter took them. The fur has gone from natural white to a warm ivory over the years, with gentle tan and gray at the tips, still long and full and plush. A flat woven cotton neck cord hangs from it — the kind worn over the coat so the muff rode ready at the front, right where small hands could find it. Somebody kept this one carefully. You can tell. Details
  • Genuine rabbit fur, long and full
  • Natural ivory/cream tone, warmed with age, with soft tan and gray shading at the tips
  • Child-sized hand muff, open at both ends
  • Flat cotton twill neck cord, natural off-white
  • Early-to-mid 20th century
  • Unsigned — no maker's label, as is typical for a child's muff of this age
  • A keepsake, display, and costume piece as much as a wearable winter accessory
Condition: The fur is full and soft throughout. There's a bit of separation along one seam; otherwise it's sound and displays beautifully — an honest, well-kept antique with plenty of life left as a keepsake or on a shelf.

Antique Child's Rabbit Fur Hand Muff — Ivory Fur with Twill Neck Cord, Early 20th Century

Early 20th Century (c. 1900s–1940s)

Antique Child's Hand Muff

Long before mittens on strings, the muff kept small hands warm. A child pushed both hands into this soft rabbit-fur tube, open at each end, and headed out into the cold with fingers tucked away. The flat cotton cord looped over the coat so the muff hung ready at the front. Children's fur muffs like this were a winter staple from roughly the 1900s through the 1940s — made to be used rather than signed, which is why, like most, it carries no maker's label.

The fur began life a natural white and has settled into a warm ivory, with soft tan and gray drifting through the tips. That it survived at all says something: a muff this age tends to be one a family cared for and handed down rather than wore out. We can't name the child whose hands it warmed, but the wear tells an honest story of many winters. Today it makes a tender keepsake for lovers of childhood antiques, and it stages beautifully with an old doll or a well-loved teddy bear.

Before there were puffy mittens on strings, there was the muff. A child would push both hands into this soft tube of rabbit fur — open at each end — and walk out into the cold with fingers tucked warm and out of sight. This one is child-sized, the kind of thing that turned a January errand into an adventure. The flat woven cotton cord looped over the coat so the muff hung at the front, ready the moment small hands got cold. Time has been kind to it. The fur started life a natural white and has settled into a warm ivory, with soft tan and gray shading drifting through the tips. It's still long, still full, still plush enough to sink a hand into. There's no maker's label, which is exactly what you'd expect from a child's muff of this age — these were winter staples, made to be used, not signed. Somewhere between the 1900s and the 1940s, a family bought this for a little one, and someone cared for it well enough that it's still here. That's the real charm of a piece like this. It warmed a child's hands through more winters than we'll ever count, then got tucked away and handed down instead of thrown out. It makes a lovely keepsake for anyone drawn to childhood antiques, and it stages beautifully alongside an old doll or a well-loved teddy bear. Photographers and costumers will know exactly what to do with it. And yes — it's genuine fur, and it'll still keep a pair of hands warm if you ask it to. Details
