Retro (1970s–1990s) Gilt, Porcelain / Ceramic Excellent

Four little plates built for a good evening. Each one carries the same still life — a straw-wrapped Chianti bottle, a poured glass of red, cheeses laid out on the board, a cluster of dark grapes, and a knife resting where someone left it. At six inches across, these are canapé plates in the truest sense: the size you pass around when the cheese comes out and nobody's in a hurry to sit down. Godinger's "Email de Limoges" line, finished with a bright gold rim, and the set has stayed together all four strong.
  • Set of four: matching 6" canapé / wine-and-cheese plates
  • Maker: Godinger, "Email de Limoges" line — the romantic old-world backstamp is part of the charm
  • Design: transfer-printed still life — Chianti, red wine, sliced meats, cheeses, grapes, and a tomato
  • Body: white porcelain with a hand-decorated look and a bright gold rim band
  • Era: later 20th-century giftware
Condition: Excellent. The gold rims are bright, the transfers crisp and clean — this set reads as though it was saved for company and used with care.

Godinger "Email de Limoges" Wine & Cheese Canapé Plates, Set of 4 — 6" Gold-Rim Porcelain

Circa 1980s–1990s

Old World Wine & Cheese Giftware

Godinger produced these plates under its "Email de Limoges" line, and the backstamp plays up the romance — a gilded crown, an oval monogram, and the year 1855 in flowing French script. Read that flourish as charm rather than history: Godinger is an American giftware house, and these are later-20th-century pieces dressed in old-world manners. The still life carries the theme through, with a straw-wrapped Chianti, a poured glass of red, a board of sliced meats and cheeses, a heap of purple grapes, and one ripe tomato, all framed by a bright band of gold.

The set came to us from a Wake Forest, North Carolina estate, by way of a collector who had relocated from Long Island, New York — the kind of household where good things were bought to be used and then kept nicely for the next occasion. At six inches across, these small plates were made for passing cheese and charcuterie around a room, a glass of red in hand and no one in a hurry to sit down. All four have stayed together and come through in fine shape.

Materials White porcelain with transfer-printed still-life decoration and an applied bright gold rim band; hand-decorated giftware finish.
Care Hand wash only to protect the gold rim; skip the dishwasher, microwave, and abrasive pads. Dry promptly with a soft cloth. Best enjoyed for light serving and display.

Some things are made for a specific kind of night. These are for the one where a few friends turn up, a bottle gets opened, and the cheese comes out of the fridge to warm on the counter. Six inches is exactly right for that — big enough for a wedge, a few crackers, and a slice of something cured, small enough to hold in one hand while the other keeps hold of your glass. Godinger made these under the "Email de Limoges" name, and the backstamp leans into the romance of it — a gilded crown, an oval monogram, a nod to old French porcelain and the year 1855. Take that flourish for what it is: charm, not a birth certificate. Godinger is an American giftware house, and these are later-20th-century pieces dressed in old-world manners. That's part of the fun. The still life printed on each plate plays right along — a straw-bottomed Chianti, a glass poured full of red, a board of sliced meats and cheeses (there's a blue-veined round in there that looks about ready), a heap of purple grapes, and one ripe tomato for good measure. The whole thing is framed by a clean band of gold around the rim. All four match, and all four have come through in fine shape. They came to us from a Wake Forest, North Carolina estate, by way of a collector who'd made the move down from Long Island — the kind of household where good things were bought to be used and then kept nicely for the next occasion. You can picture the evenings these saw.
