Retro (1970s–1990s) Bone China, Gilt Excellent
HDRH-VR-0026
Two hands, a heart, a crown — friendship, love, and loyalty, the old Claddagh promise, rendered in gold on creamy Irish bone china. This little sugar bowl and creamer come from Royal Tara of Galway, in the pattern they call "The Claddagh Brooch." Melon-ribbed bodies, bright gold rims, and that clasped-hands motif ringed in Celtic black, coral, and green. Breakfast-table scale, and dainty enough to prove it.
  • Maker: Royal Tara, Tara Hall, Galway, Ireland — genuine Irish fine bone china
  • Pattern: "The Claddagh Brooch," a less common Royal Tara design (not the mainstream Tara Brooch line)
  • The set: open footed sugar bowl + matching footed creamer with loop handle and gold-lined spout — both pieces convey together
  • Size: creamer 4" handle to spout, 2.75" in diameter; sugar bowl 2" high, 3.5" across
  • Details: fluted melon-ribbed bodies, bright gold rims, gold Claddagh motif in a Celtic band of black with coral and green enamel dots
  • Scale: breakfast-table / demitasse — small and dainty
Condition: Excellent — bright gold rims, crisp transfers, no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. Ready for the table.

Royal Tara Claddagh Brooch Sugar & Creamer Set — Irish Bone China

Late 20th Century (c. 1990s)

Irish Fine Bone China

The Claddagh is Galway's own emblem — two hands for friendship, a heart for love, a crown for loyalty — and it takes its name from a fishing village just outside the city. For generations the symbol has been given between friends and sweethearts and handed down through families as a small token of belonging. To find it on bone china made in Galway is to see the emblem standing on its own home ground.

This two-piece sugar and creamer set was made by Royal Tara, the fine bone china house at Tara Hall in Galway, in a pattern named "The Claddagh Brooch." The underside carries the Tara Hall backstamp — the house illustration above "Fine Bone China, Made in Galway, Ireland" — a mark Royal Tara used in its later decades. The Claddagh Brooch design turns up far less often than the mainstream Tara Brooch line, making it a quieter corner of the maker's Celtic range. It came to us from an estate whose shelves held a number of Irish pieces, kept and cared for over many years.

Materials Fine bone china with bright gold rims and a gold-and-enamel Claddagh transfer; fluted, melon-ribbed bodies. Made by Royal Tara at Tara Hall, Galway, Ireland.
Care Hand-wash in warm water with mild soap; avoid the dishwasher and microwave to protect the gold rims. Dry with a soft cloth. Store stacked with felt or paper between pieces.

The Claddagh takes its name from a fishing village just outside Galway city — hands for friendship, a heart for love, a crown for loyalty. People have been giving the symbol back and forth for generations: friend to friend, sweetheart to sweetheart, one hand into the next down through a family. So a Claddagh piece made in Galway is the symbol standing on its own home ground, which is a nice thing to have on a breakfast table. This is a two-piece sugar and creamer set from Royal Tara, the fine bone china house at Tara Hall in Galway, in the pattern they call "The Claddagh Brooch" — the name printed on each piece in green Gaelic-style lettering. Both have that creamy, faintly translucent bone-china body, fluted into melon ribs and finished with a bright gold rim. On the face of each, the clasped hands and crowned heart are worked in gold, set inside a circular Celtic band of black with little coral-red and green enamel dots. The sugar bowl is open and footed; the creamer stands on its own foot with a loop handle and a gold-lined spout. Small, dainty, made to sit together. Royal Tara is the real article — genuine Irish bone china, still based at Tara Hall — and this Claddagh Brooch design turns up far less often than their mainstream Tara Brooch line. If you keep an eye out for Galway china, or you've a soft spot for the friendship-love-loyalty story, this is a quieter, harder-to-find corner of it.
