A small, beautifully formed baluster cream jug, hand made in Sheffield, England by Wallace Pewter. Wallace Pewter Handmade Cream Jug, Sheffield England, c. 1960s–1980s

Circa 1960s–1980s

English Sheffield Pewter — Baluster Cream Jug

Sheffield has been the heart of English metalwork for centuries — silver, silverplate, and pewter — and small workshops like Wallace Pewter carried that tradition forward through the second half of the twentieth century. The base of this little jug is stamped WALLACE PEWTER with a crowned W monogram, a circular guild-style mark enclosing the craftsman initials GRF, the declaration HAND MADE IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, and the model number E100. Each element of that mark is doing real work — the crown and monogram identify the firm, the initials name a hand at the bench, and the Sheffield stamp is a quality claim with centuries of weight behind it.

The form itself is borrowed faithfully from the eighteenth-century English baluster measure: a softly rounded body on a stepped foot, a flared rim, a clean pinched spout, a scroll handle that curves out from the rim with a small reeded detail at the upper attachment. Pieces like this were made for the gift and tea-tray trade through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, when there was a real market for hand-finished English pewter in traditional forms. They were never meant to be antiques. They were meant to be quietly good — small, useful, well-made — and that is what this one is. It came to us from a third-generation Italian-American family on Long Island, where it had long been kept among a treasured collection of pewter — pieces carried across the Atlantic by the family's grandparents and held close through the generations since.

Materials Hand-finished pewter. Cast and turned baluster body, applied scroll handle with reeded detail at the rim, stepped ringed foot, pinched pouring spout.
Care Hand wash with warm water and mild soap, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives, dishwashers, and prolonged contact with acidic foods. The natural patina is part of the piece.

This small, characterful cream jug is a fine example of the late-twentieth-century Sheffield pewter revival — a working tradition in which several established English firms produced hand-finished pewter in forms drawn directly from English tavern and domestic ware of the 1600s and 1700s. The base of this piece is stamped clearly: WALLACE PEWTER with a crowned W monogram, a circular guild-style mark enclosing the craftsman initials GRF, the proud declaration HAND MADE IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, and the model number E100. Sheffield has been the heart of English metalwork — silver, silverplate, and pewter — for centuries, and a piece like this carries that lineage with quiet authority. The form is what gives this little jug its presence. A softly rounded baluster body sits on a stepped, ringed foot. The rim flares gently and pinches into a clean pouring spout. The scroll handle curves out from the rim with a small reeded detail at the upper attachment, then loops back to the body in a single confident line. It is a silhouette borrowed faithfully from eighteenth-century English baluster measures, scaled down here for the table — for cream at a tea tray, or simply as a small sculptural object on a sideboard.

Rated Very Good. The body shows light surface scratches and minor scuffs in keeping with age and previous use — there are no dents, cracks, or structural damage of any kind. Natural oxidation is present in the recessed areas around the base and at the handle attachments, which is entirely normal for aged pewter and gives the piece its warmth and depth. The scroll handle is firmly seated with no bending or separation. The rim is true. The interior is clean.
