Vintage Spanish Silverplate Grapevine Goblets, Pair — Sculpted EPB Stems, Made in Spain

Circa 1970s

Old World Spanish Silverplate

Stamped MADE IN SPAIN directly into the base, this pair sits squarely within the Spanish electroplated brass (EPB) silverplate tradition that supplied North American and European gift and hospitality markets from the post-war decades onward. The grapevine stem — grape clusters, twisting tendrils, leaves caught mid-curl — is a Baroque and Renaissance motif Spanish silversmiths carried forward in plated form long after solid silver gave way.

No full maker's name is legible. Workshops including Valero, Plator Silverstone, and Roma S.L. all produced near-identical grapevine goblets in this period, and we won't pin one without evidence. What we can read clearly is the workmanship: machine-spun bowls with faint concentric lathe lines, a heavy cast-and-applied stem, and a bright nickel-silver electroplate over brass — the warm gold tone deep in each bowl is the brass core showing through. Construction and finish place them comfortably in the 1970s.

Materials Electroplated brass (EPB) — bright silver plate over a brass core. Tulip bowls machine-spun; sculpted grapevine stems cast and applied; domed foot.
Care Wash by hand in warm soapy water and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Skip the dishwasher and abrasive polishes — both can strip the plate. Polish gently with a silver cloth as needed.

Some objects carry a memory of older traditions even when they were made in your lifetime. These goblets do that. Each stem is a fully three-dimensional grapevine — clusters of grapes, twisting tendrils, leaves caught mid-curl — climbing from a domed foot up to a clean tulip bowl. The motif is older than any of us: Baroque and Renaissance silversmiths working across Spain and Italy carved this same vine in solid silver for noble tables, and Spanish workshops kept the form alive long after the original metal gave way to plate. This pair are stamped MADE IN SPAIN directly into the metal of the base, which places them squarely within the Spanish electroplated brass (EPB) silverplate tradition that supplied the North American and European gift and hospitality markets from the post-war decades onward. We can't read a full maker's name in the mark, so we won't claim one — pieces with this exact form were turned out by several established Spanish workshops including Valero, Plator Silverstone, and Roma S.L. The construction tells its own story regardless: machine-spun bowls (you can see the faint concentric lathe lines on the interior), heavy cast-and-applied stems, and a bright nickel-silver electroplate over a brass core. The warm golden tone visible deep inside the bowl is the brass showing through — a cue we use, alongside the heft and the mark, to date them to roughly the 1970s. Highlights
  • Sold as a matching pair
  • Fully sculpted grapevine stems with grape clusters and leaf detail
  • Bright, even silver-plate finish over a brass base
  • Intentional oxidized antiquing pooled in the stem recesses heightens the relief
  • Classic tulip bowl form on a domed foot
  • Stamped MADE IN SPAIN; Spanish EPB silverplate tradition
Details
  • Material: Electroplated brass (EPB) — silver plate over a brass core; not sterling
  • Mark: Stamped MADE IN SPAIN on the base of each; no fully legible maker name
  • Era: Circa 1970s
  • Form: Tulip bowl on a domed foot, sculpted grapevine stem
  • Approximate dimensions: 7" tall, 3¼" rim diameter (each)
  • Sold: As a pair — two goblets
Condition Both goblets are in Very Good to Excellent condition. The plate is bright and uniformly polished with no visible plate loss, pitting, scratches, or deformation to either bowl or stem. The dark detail in the grapevine recesses is intentional oxidized antiquing — the workshop's way of throwing the relief into shadow — and reads as character, not tarnish. Clean, polished examples like these are genuinely standout in a category where worn finishes are common. They arrive ready to set on the table or display on a shelf, exactly as found.
