Vintage Orion Japan Porcelain Lady Bust Figurine with Rose Hat

Circa 1950s – 1960s

Mid-Century Japanese Export Porcelain, Decorative Bust

This lady bust bears the red stamp of Orion China with "Made in Japan" — placing her in the post-occupation export era, when Japanese porcelain studios were producing some of their finest decorative work for the American market. The "Made in Japan" marking dates the piece to the mid-1950s through 1960s, a golden age for these small studios.

Lady bust figurines were popular vanity and shelf ornaments in mid-century America — small portraits of idealized femininity rendered in glazed porcelain. Japanese makers excelled at the form, combining skilled hand-painting with applied sculptural elements that European manufacturers charged far more for.

This example shows the hallmarks of careful studio work: the face is delicately painted with long lashes, softly blushed cheeks, and coral lips. The wide-brimmed hat carries an applied porcelain rose and rosebuds — three-dimensional, placed by hand, not merely painted on. A gold-dotted necklace graces her neckline. She's fully finished on all sides, meant to be admired from every angle. The ruffled brim shows honest wear from seven decades of display, reflected transparently in our pricing and condition notes.

Materials Glazed porcelain, hand-painted facial details with coral and gold accents, applied three-dimensional porcelain rose and rosebuds, gold-trimmed ruffled brim, painted gold necklace with pendant, fully finished on all sides
Care The applied rose and ruffled brim are the vulnerable spots. Avoid the gold-trimmed areas when cleaning — the gold is over-glaze and wears with abrasion. Never submerge. Display away from shelf edges.

A Little Lady with a Lot of Character

There is something irresistible about a porcelain lady bust. Maybe it is the way she sits on a vanity or shelf, perfectly poised, as if she has been waiting there since 1955 for someone to notice her. This one, made by Orion China of Japan, has that quiet mid-century charm in spades. She wears a wide-brimmed hat in a lovely soft mint green, its ruffled white brim edged in gold. A single sculpted porcelain rose in warm peach-coral sits atop the hat alongside tiny rosebuds and green leaves — all three-dimensional, applied by hand, not merely painted. Her dark hair is swept back beneath the hat, visible from the sides and back. Her face is serene and refined: downcast eyes with long painted lashes, softly defined brows, coral lips, and the faintest blush on her cheeks. A delicate gold-dotted necklace with a small pendant adorns her neckline. The base has an organic, curved form with two small holes — likely original design features for display or possibly intended for an earring holder function. The piece is fully finished on all sides, so she looks just as lovely from the back as from the front. On the bottom, you will find the red Orion stamp with a small decorative emblem and "Made in Japan" — placing her firmly in the post-occupation era, most likely the 1950s or 1960s, when Japanese porcelain manufacturers were producing some of their finest decorative work for the American market.
