Set of Four Footed White Rose Dessert Bowls — Platinum-Trim Cream China, 4.5"
Circa 1950s
Mid-Century Floral China
Dessert once had its own small ritual, and a set like this was made for it — four matched bowls a mid-century hostess kept for berries and cream or a scoop of sherbet at the close of supper. Each is warm cream china with a single white garden rose at the center, raised on a short pedestal foot in the old compote-and-sauce manner and finished with hand-lined platinum around both the rim and the foot.
The base reads "Fine Manchester China," a period giftware backstamp of the 1950s rather than the mark of any documented factory. The silver-toned trim and the printed rose place it squarely in its decade. The set came to us from an estate near Fredericksburg, Virginia — four small bowls that stayed together through the years and are ready to gather again at the sweet end of a meal.

There was a time when dessert was its own small ceremony. Not a sheet cake, not a pint straight from the freezer — a few berries with cream, a scoop of sherbet, a spoonful of something sweet served in a bowl kept just for that. This set of four is exactly the kind a mid-century hostess reached for: small, matched, and pretty enough to bring to the table without a second thought.
Each bowl is warm cream china, glossy and easy on the eye, with a single white garden rose printed dead center — ivory-white with a blush at the heart and green leaves behind it. What lifts them above the everyday berry bowl is the form: each one is raised on a short pedestal foot, in the compote-and-sauce tradition, and the platinum comes in twice — a hand-lined band around the rim and a second line following the foot. Silver-toned rather than gold, it gives the set a cooler, cleaner look than the usual gold-trimmed china of the era. At 4.5 inches across and an inch and a half deep, they stay small footed bowls rather than tall compotes — right in that useful spot for fruit, dessert, berries, or sauce.
The base carries a heraldic shield reading "Fine Manchester China" — no country, no pattern number, just the mark. Manchester China is one of those mid-century giftware names that never left much of a paper trail, so I'll call it what it is: a charming period backstamp of the 1950s rather than proof of any particular factory. The rose and the platinum tell you plenty about when this was made and who it was made for. This set came to us from an estate near Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Condition: Very Good. All four bowls present with no chips and no cracks. The glaze is bright and glossy throughout and the platinum stays bright with only light, age-appropriate wear. The rose decals are crisp; one reads very slightly lighter than its mates, the ordinary variance you'd expect from mid-century printing. A clean, ready-to-use set.
