Plush Country Santa Decoration — Burgundy Velvet Hat, Sherpa Trim & Chunky Yarn Beard
Late 1980s–1990s
Country folk Christmas
There is something disarming about a handmade Santa, and this one has it in spades. He wears a deep burgundy velvet hat that bends at the tip into a little loop — hang him from a knob or a spray of greenery, or stand him on a shelf and let him lean. A band of cream sherpa circles the brim, pinned with a cluster of tiny pinecones and a sprig of red berries, and below it spills a big, chunky beard of soft white yarn. Two black bead eyes and a round berry-red nose finish him — cheerful, woolly, and completely without pretense.
He is the sort of country-Christmas craft that came out of the late 1980s and 1990s: plush velvet, sherpa fleece, and yarn over a soft fill, about fifteen inches tall. He came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, from a collection where the Christmas things were clearly chosen with affection — the velvet still rich, the beard full, the trim clean. Pure, uncomplicated holiday warmth.
