A Father Christmas done in the old-world way — a deep oxblood-burgundy glaze that pools wine-dark in the folds and breaks to soft cream along every raised edge. He leans over his toy sack, and here's the quiet trick of the thing: that sack is a candle holder. A standard tea light drops into the glazed well, and when it's lit the whole scene warms from the inside — the tumbling teddy, the little soldier in his tall hat, the gold horn all catching the glow.
  • Glazed ceramic, hand-painted face and gold trim
  • Reactive oxblood-burgundy glaze breaking to cream on the raised edges
  • Functional tea-light well fits a standard tea light (flame or flameless LED)
  • Molded poinsettia-and-foliage panel down the robe, edged in gold
  • Toy sack spills a nutcracker-style soldier, a teddy bear, and a golden horn
  • About 6 in tall, 5 in wide, 4 in deep
Condition: Very good. Glaze is glossy and rich, the figures all intact and secure, and the candle well is clean — no wax, no soot. The gilt on the horn and a bit of the trim has softened with a touch of honest wear, which only adds to the old-world look. No chips, no cracks, structurally sound and ready for the mantel.

Old World Santa Tea-Light Candle Holder with Toy Sack — Oxblood Glaze, 6"

Old-world in style; contemporary production

Old World Santa Tea-Light Candle Holder

Every house has a piece that means Christmas has really started. Not the first box down from the attic, but the one that gets unwrapped and set in its place, and then the first candle goes in, and the room changes. This Old World Santa was made for that moment. He leans over a toy sack that holds a tea light, and when the wick catches, the glow rises up through the whole little scene — the teddy bear mid-tumble, the soldier at his post, the gold horn ready to sound. The deep oxblood glaze goes warm and wine-dark in the light, cream along the high edges, the way the good old holiday pieces always seemed to hold candlelight better than anything new.

He came to us from an estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina, one of those quiet homes where the Christmas things clearly had their own shelf and their own order to come out in. There's no name on the bottom and no story we can prove, but you don't really need one — you can feel that he was set out year after year, lit and admired and put carefully away again. Now he's looking for the next mantel, the next window ledge, the next family that lights the first candle of the season and lets him glow. He's small enough to tuck in anywhere and old-world enough to look like he's always belonged there. Some pieces just know how to keep Christmas. This is one of them.

Materials Glazed ceramic with a reactive oxblood-burgundy glaze, hand-painted face and accents, and gold-touched trim throughout.
Care Wipe with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth. Never leave a burning flame unattended — a flameless LED tea light keeps the glow going, safely, all season.

Some Christmas pieces you set out because they belong to the season. This is one of them. A Father Christmas in a long robe, leaning over his toy sack, painted the deep way the old ones were — an oxblood-burgundy glaze that runs wine-dark in the folds and breaks to soft cream wherever the surface rises. It's a reactive glaze, so no two spots are quite alike, and the effect is rich and a little bit ancient, the kind of red you'd have found on a mantel a hundred years ago. Look closer and the sack gives up its secret. It's a tea-light holder. A standard tea light drops right into the glazed well, and once it's lit the light climbs up through the whole scene — the teddy bear tumbling over the rim, the little soldier standing at attention in his burgundy coat and tall shako hat, the gold horn tipped up as if it's about to sound. Sprigs of gold-touched greenery trim the rolled edge of the sack. Down the back of the robe runs a molded panel of green-and-cream poinsettia and foliage, hand-detailed and edged in gold, so there's no bad angle to set him on the table. He's small — about six inches tall — which is exactly the size that finds its spot and keeps it. The piece that comes out when the first candles are lit at Christmas, and glows there quietly while the rest of the house catches up. There's no maker's mark on the base, and we won't pretend to one; he's an unsigned Santa, old-world in spirit, and he carries the mood without needing a name on the bottom.
