Vintage Norma Dori Equestrian Scarf -- Horse Portrait with Riding Tack, 29.5" Square

Circa 1970s – 1980s

European Designer Scarf, Equestrian Motif

We picked this scarf up from an estate in Hobbesville, North Carolina, where the previous owner — a longtime jewelry professional and serious collector — clearly didn't limit herself to things that sparkle. Her taste ran wide and ran deep. This is a Norma Dori piece, designed in London and made in Italy, and it has the hand of quality fabric the moment you touch it.

The equestrian motif is beautifully composed: a horse portrait at center, flanked by riding crops and leather tack, all rendered in navy, red, cream, and brown. It's the kind of scarf that says something without raising its voice. At twenty-nine and a half inches square, it works as a neck scarf, a handbag accent, or framed on a wall if you're so inclined. Condition is very good — this was owned by someone who took care of her things.

Materials Fine woven fabric with silky hand and subtle sheen (original care label removed; fiber content unconfirmed), hand-rolled edges, printed equestrian design in navy, red, cream, and brown
Care Store flat or loosely rolled, not folded, to prevent permanent creasing. If cleaning is needed, dry cleaning is recommended since the fiber content is unconfirmed. Keep away from direct sunlight during display, as printed colors may fade over time. The hand-rolled edges are a sign of quality construction — handle gently to preserve them.

Some scarves are accessories. This one is a conversation piece.

Designed by Norma Dori -- a London designer whose name has become quietly collectible among vintage scarf enthusiasts -- this luxurious square scarf features a striking equestrian portrait rendered in warm, painterly detail. A bridled horse gazes out from the center in rich sable and chestnut browns, its tack rendered with the kind of loving attention to buckles, stitching, and leather grain that speaks to someone who actually knows horses.

The composition radiates outward from that central portrait through layers of equestrian imagery: crossed riding crops form a bold X across a vivid red field, while the corners are anchored by saddle-leather elements -- perhaps flaps or cases -- in warm tobacco brown. Gold-toned hardware details (buckles, bits, studs) catch the light throughout. The whole design is framed by a deep navy border that gives the piece weight and presence.

Norma Dori scarves were produced in Italy during the latter decades of the 20th century. The brand is known for country pursuit and sporting themes -- equestrian scenes, game birds, pastoral motifs -- rendered in a style that nods to the great European scarf houses without imitating them. The fabric has a silky-smooth hand with a subtle sheen and fluid drape that gives it real presence, whether worn at the neck or displayed as art.

At 29.5 inches square, this is a versatile size. Fold it into a triangle and tie it at the neck over a blazer. Knot it to a handbag handle for a pop of color. Use it as a pocket square, a hair wrap, or a belt. Frame it. It works as well with jeans and a white shirt as it does with a riding jacket and boots.
