Jim Rigby Studio Pottery — Heart-Pierced Two-Tone Stoneware Votive / Small Planter, Signed
Studio pottery, late 20th–early 21st century
Hand-thrown studio pottery
The base carries an incised signature: Jim Rigby, in the potter's own hand. James Franklin Rigby Sr. (1942–2025) was a potter in Newport News, Virginia, who threw and demonstrated his craft for more than thirty years — including at the Newport News Fall Festival, where he showed his work for over three decades — before he passed in 2025. Signed Rigby pieces still turn up in the resale market, found one at a time by people who notice them.
This little vessel is hand-thrown and hand-carved studio stoneware, roughly three inches all around. A soft slate blue-grey glaze pours over a raw tan speckled body and drips down the front — intentional studio character, not a flaw — and open hearts are cut straight through the upper wall, so a tealight set inside glows through them. It works as a votive or as a small planter for a succulent or air plant. The piece came to us from a North Carolina estate. Condition is excellent: clean rim, crisp pierced hearts, sound body and base, and a sharp signature, with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
