HOMCO Old Farmer & Wife Bisque Porcelain Figurine Pair — Model 8811

Circa 1970s–1980s

Pastoral / Old World Figurine Pair

A matched pair from Home Interiors of America (HOMCO), model 8811, often catalogued as the Old Farmer Couple — and sometimes as Old Man with Dog and Old Woman with Lamb. Each figure is hand-painted bisque porcelain over a glazed base, stamped 8811 on the underside beside the familiar Home Interiors maker's mark. HOMCO produced these pastoral figures from the 1970s into the 1980s, and the line became one of the most recognizable in American giftware of that era — sold through Home Interiors' famous in-home demonstration parties, displayed on mantels and china cabinets across the country, and given as wedding, anniversary, and Christmas presents in countless households.

This pair came to The Vintage Rose Boutique from a collection in Wake Forest, North Carolina. They were chosen for the warmth and detail of the painting — the gray strands in the farmer's beard, the stitched patches on the wife's apron, the soft cottage palette of peach, denim, dusty rose, and cream — and for the fact that both figures have stayed together over the decades the way they were always meant to.

Materials Hand-painted bisque porcelain on glazed bases. Each figure stamped 8811 on the underside with the Home Interiors maker's mark.
Care Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Avoid water and cleaners — bisque is unglazed and will absorb stains. Keep out of direct sunlight to preserve hand-painted color.

Here's an honest American pastoral, in two pieces. The farmer stands tall in his peach work coat and patched denim, hat pushed back, gray beard and a quiet smile. He holds a wriggling brown-and-white spaniel pup against his chest while his older spaniel — black-and-white, faithful, leaning in — waits at his knee. His wife, kerchiefed in cream linen and dressed in a denim-blue blouse and dusty rose skirt, cradles a fresh-cut head of cabbage and offers a small turnip to the white lamb at her side. Her apron has been mended at the hem with tiny cross-stitched patches, the kind of detail that turns a figurine into a story. This is HOMCO model 8811 — Home Interiors of America's classic Old Farmer Couple, sometimes catalogued as Old Man with Dog and Old Woman with Lamb. Both figures stand approximately 8 inches tall, hand-painted on bisque porcelain over glazed bases. Each is stamped 8811 on the underside, beneath the familiar Home Interiors maker's mark. HOMCO produced these pastoral pairs from the 1970s into the 1980s as part of a broader Old World figurine line that became a fixture in American homes — sold through home-party demonstrations, kept on mantels, given as wedding and anniversary gifts, and now collected for the very warmth that put them there in the first place. The painting is what carries them. Look at the farmer's beard — strands of soft gray over a warmer base, not just a wash. The lamb's wool is stippled, the cabbage leaves veined in two greens. Even the patches on the wife's apron are detailed with tiny stitches. These were sculpted to be looked at closely. Details

  • Hand-painted bisque porcelain on glazed base
  • Approximately 8 inches tall (each)

Condition Very Good. Both figures show light wear consistent with their age. The farmer has a small mark to the back brim of his hat — visible only from behind, not from any normal display angle. The wife is clean throughout. No chips, cracks, or restorations to the figures themselves. Hand-painted detail is sharp and well-preserved on both pieces. Provenance From a Wake Forest, North Carolina collection. Care Dust gently with a soft, dry brush. Bisque is unglazed where it meets the air — water and soaps will soak in and stain. Keep away from direct sunlight to preserve the hand-painted color.
