Circa 1950s – 1960s
Mid-Century Ceramic Miniature, Animal Figurine
Miniature animal figurines were enormously popular in American homes during the 1950s and 1960s. They filled curio cabinets, perched on windowsills, and lined the shelves of dime stores and gift shops from coast to coast. Most were produced by Japanese potteries for the export market — slip-cast in molds, hand-painted with quick, confident brushwork, and shipped by the thousands.
This skunk captures the form’s appeal perfectly: a jaunty walking pose, head lowered with tiny painted eyes looking upward in an expression somewhere between curious and plotting, and a magnificent bushy tail curled proudly over the back. The black and white glaze work is simple but effective — bold strokes defining the body while the signature white stripe sweeps cleanly from forehead to tail tip.
The unglazed base with its buff-colored paw pads and vent hole confirms slip-cast construction. No maker’s mark is present, which is common for miniature figurines of this era — many were identified only by paper labels that have long since worn away. The style, scale, and construction are consistent with Japanese export ware of the period.
