A real coconut shell, turned by hand into a little footed bowl and painted with a tropical sunset that stops you where you stand. Silhouetted palms lean against a coral sky, still water catches the light, and blue-and-gold sunburst florals ring the whole thing on a deep black lacquer ground. Set it mouth-up as a catch-all, or turn it mouth-down and let the scene glow like a painted orb. Near the base, in gold cursive, it reads "Belém Pará" — the great Amazon river port in Brazil, worn soft with the years, where a traveler carried this home from the tropics.
  • Material: natural coconut shell, hand-painted and lacquered
  • Scene: tropical sunset — palms, still water, distant hills, rustic shoreline fence
  • Detail: Art-Deco-flavored folk florals, copper pinstripe rings, gold "Belém Pará" script
  • Size: 5.5 inches in diameter
  • Form: footed rounded bowl; displays mouth-up or mouth-down
  • Origin: Brazilian travel souvenir from Belém do Pará, hand-done by a local artisan (unsigned, no maker's mark)
Condition: Good. Fine crazing throughout the lacquer, and light rubbing to the high points — the sunset scene stays vivid and fully intact, and the piece is sound.

Hand-Painted Brazilian Coconut Souvenir Bowl — Lacquered Tropical Sunset Folk Art from Belém do Pará

Mid-20th Century

Hand-Painted Lacquered Folk Art

Every so often a piece tells you exactly where it's from, and this one does. Turn it toward the light and you'll find "Belém Pará" lettered in gold near the foot — Belém, capital of Pará state, the great Brazilian port where the Amazon finally reaches the Atlantic. It's a city of river markets and mango-lined streets, the kind of place a mid-century traveler passed through and wanted to remember. So they carried home a coconut shell, painted by hand and finished in lacquer, its dome given over to a tropical sunset. The inscription tells us where it was sold, not who painted it; the work is unsigned, the way most of these souvenirs were — made quickly and well by a local artisan whose name never made it onto the shell.

It came to us from an estate in Youngsville, North Carolina, a household that also kept hand-painted pieces from Japan. We don't know the whole story behind it — whether someone in that family made the trip or received the bowl as a gift — but the mix suggests a home that valued things brought back from far-off places. However it traveled, it's here now, its sunset still glowing, its gold lettering still pointing back to the mouth of the Amazon.

Materials Natural coconut shell, hand-painted and lacquered, with gold script lettering.
Care Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Keep away from water and direct sun — old lacquer prefers a dry shelf and gentle handling.

There was a stretch of the last century when you proved you'd seen the tropics by bringing one home in a suitcase — a painted coconut, a lacquered shell, something bright and hand-done from a stand near the water. This is one of those, and the water it came from is the Amazon. Belém sits at the mouth of the river, where it spills into the Atlantic — a city of riverboat markets and mango-lined streets, and the last stop before the open sea. A real coconut, finished into a rounded footed bowl, its interior lacquered plain glossy black, its dome given over entirely to a sunset. And what a sunset. Palm trees stand in silhouette against a coral-and-salmon sky, blue-green hills sit low in the distance, and still water holds the whole scene in reflection. A rustic wooden fence runs along the near shore — the kind of small, sure detail a practiced hand adds without thinking. Around the scene, on a black lacquer ground, stylized sunburst florals in blue and gold, quick green fern strokes, and fine copper pinstripe rings circling near the foot. It's folk art with an Art Deco backbone: bold, graphic, confident, and unmistakably done by hand. Near the base, in gold cursive, it reads "Belém Pará" — the place-name now worn soft with the years, a locality any traveler would have recognized in a heartbeat. Turn it mouth-up and it's a catch-all for keys, coins, whatever lands in your pocket by evening. Turn it mouth-down and the painting curves into an orb, a small tropical world you can set on a shelf and keep.
  • Material: natural coconut shell, hand-painted and lacquered, interior finished glossy black
  • Scene: tropical sunset — silhouetted palms, coral sky, still reflecting water, low hills, rustic shoreline fence
  • Detail: Art-Deco-flavored sunburst florals in blue and gold, green fern strokes, copper pinstripe rings, gold "Belém Pará" script
  • Size: 5.5 inches in diameter
  • Form: footed rounded bowl; displays mouth-up as a dish or mouth-down as a painted orb
  • Origin: Brazilian travel souvenir from Belém do Pará, hand-done by a local artisan (unsigned, no maker's mark)
Condition: Good. The black lacquer carries fine crazing throughout, inside and out, the way old lacquer does. There's light scuffing and gentle rubbing to the high points. Through all of it, the sunset scene reads vivid and complete, the shell is structurally sound with no cracks or breaks, and the interior is clean — a hand-painted souvenir that's kept its picture and its charm.
