Wood-Fired Salt-Glaze Studio Pottery
This small jug was thrown on the wheel by an individual potter's hand — you can read it in the slightly irregular rim, the faint throwing rings inside, and the bare wire-cut foot. The brown stoneware body is banded with soft blue-grey flashing and freckled with heavy iron and manganese speckle, the glaze shifting from earthy matte to quiet satin where it caught more of the fire. A pulled strap handle is joined top and bottom, and the rim is pinched into a small pouring lip.
The base carries a freehand cursive signature scratched into the clay — incised by hand, not a factory stamp. It appears to read "Michelle." A first name only, no surname and no pottery name, partly lost in the clay, so the maker remains as yet unidentified. It came from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, the collection of someone who spent her career in the fine jewelry trade and brought that same trained, patient eye to the decorative objects she gathered. A person used to judging quality up close chose this signed little jug on its own merit, not for a famous name — and that, more than any signature, is its recommendation.
