- Form: hand-thrown spouted bottle-jug — globular body, waisted neck, rolled lip, short spout and pulled strap handle
- Size: small, roughly 5 to 6 inches high
- Glaze & decoration: pale grey-celadon salt glaze with allover fine crackle, iron-grey and charcoal speckling, incised iron-brown bands at the neck, and small cobalt accents — a lozenge on the shoulder, a faint streak beneath the spout
- The mark: impressed block WMH stamp used alone with a firing number — Hewitt's own personal mark (1984–1995), so this is his own hand, datable to roughly the mid-1980s to early 1990s
- The collection: one of several Mark Hewitt salt-glazed pieces gathered by the same North Carolina collector

North Carolina Studio Pottery
Mark Hewitt set up his pottery in Pittsboro, North Carolina in 1983. He trained in the English country-pottery tradition that runs back through Michael Cardew to Bernard Leach, then settled in the North Carolina Piedmont with its own deep heritage of salt-glaze and folk pottery. Both worlds meet in his wood-fired salt kiln, and his work is held in museum collections. This small spouted jug carries an impressed block WMH text stamp on its base, used alone with no apprentice initials. Per Hewitt Pottery's published stamp guide, the lone WMH stamp is Mark's own personal mark, used 1984 to 1995 — so this was thrown, glazed, decorated, and stamped by Mark himself, and dates to roughly the mid-1980s to early 1990s.
It comes from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate. The collector who kept it spent her career in the high-end jewelry trade and brought that same patient, knowing eye to the decorative objects she gathered at home — she bought what was real and what was good. This jug is one of several Mark Hewitt salt-glazed pieces from her collection, and it is easy to see she chose carefully.
