Retro (1970s–1990s) Pewter Very Good
HDRF-VR-0034
One wheel, one raised arm, ruffles caught mid-flutter — the whole figurine is a single second of balance, frozen in pewter. Signed by the artist on the top of the base with a 1986 copyright date, and deep-stamped 1987 on the side: sculpted by Colorado pewter artist Michael Ricker (1940–2006) and cast at his Estes Park studio the following year. About four inches of cheerful nerve with the lifted arm still perfectly straight — the detail these almost always lose. Highlights
  • Signed work by Michael Ricker (1940–2006), American pewter sculptor, Estes Park, Colorado
  • Cast pewter clown on unicycle, approximately 4 inches tall on an integral base
  • Two marks: artist's signed copyright with 1986 date on top of base; manufacturer's 1987 deep-stamped on side
  • Raised arm fully intact and straight — the hardest detail to find on figurines like this
  • Even soft-grey patina across the whole figure
Condition: Very good. Even patina throughout, the soft grey of pewter that's been sitting quietly for forty years. No chips, no repairs, no bent components. Lifted arm fully intact.

Michael Ricker Pewter Clown on Unicycle — Signed and Dated 1986/1987, Estes Park Colorado

Designed 1986, cast 1987

Figural Pewter Collectible — Circus / Clown Subject

Signed by Michael Ricker (1940–2006), the Colorado pewter sculptor whose Estes Park studio became one of the most prolific cast-pewter operations in postwar America. Ricker founded Ricker-Bartlett in the late 1960s with Norb Bartlett, who taught him the molding and casting techniques the studio became known for. Across a forty-year career he produced hundreds of thousands of figurines a year — children at play, animals, sentimental Americana, and a recurring lane of circus and clown subjects.

This figurine carries two stamps. The top of the base is signed © Ricker '86 — the artist's copyright, marking the year the design was finalized. The side of the base is deep-stamped 1987 — the studio's production date for this casting. The same year Ricker delivered his monumental miniature pewter town, Park City: America Remembered, to President Gerald Ford. We haven't been able to pin a specific edition name or number to the unicycle clown from the marks alone, and we won't pretend otherwise. What is unambiguous is the maker, the dates, and the studio.

Materials Cast pewter on integral pewter base, sand-cast and hand-finished at the Ricker-Bartlett studio. Approximately four inches tall.
Care Dust gently with a soft dry cloth. Avoid water, polish, and abrasives — pewter darkens naturally and the patina is part of the piece. Display away from direct heat.

The whole thing is a held breath. One arm up for balance, the other tucked, costume ruffles caught mid-flutter, and underneath it all that single wheel doing the impossible. Whoever sculpted this understood something about timing — the figure isn't posing, it's between moves. It turns out we know who sculpted it. The top of the base carries the artist's signed copyright with a 1986 date — Michael Ricker (1940–2006), the Colorado pewter sculptor whose Estes Park studio produced hundreds of thousands of cast figurines across a forty-year career. The side of the base carries a separate, deep, legible 1987: the manufacturer's production date. So the design was finalized in 1986 and cast in pewter the following year — the same year Ricker's monumental miniature pewter town, Park City: America Remembered, was presented to President Gerald Ford. Clowns and circus subjects were a recurring lane in Ricker's output through the mid- and late-1980s: small narrative figures — jugglers, jesters, hoop-and-dog acts, magicians with rabbits — cast at the Ricker-Bartlett studio he founded with Norb Bartlett in the late 1960s. This one belongs to that family. We can't pin down a specific edition name or number from the marks alone (Ricker's larger limited editions came with certificates; smaller giftware pieces from this era often didn't), but the signature, the date, and the studio attribution are unambiguous. What makes this piece worth a second look is condition. The raised arm is still there, and still straight. Pewter at this gauge bends if you look at it sideways, and most of these figurines lost their lifted detail decades ago. This one came through intact, with even patina across the whole figure — the soft grey you want from cast pewter that's been sitting quietly on a shelf for the better part of forty years.
