Vintage RMN (Roman) Graduated Faux Pearl Strand Necklace — 1980s Hand-Knotted with Original Hang Tag

1980s

American Costume Jewelry, Classic Pearl Strand

The Roman Company — RMN on its hang tags — was one of those quietly prolific American costume jewelry houses that lived at the department-store counter rather than the museum case. Melvin Roman founded the company in St. Louis in 1953, registered the RMN trademark in 1973, and ran it until 1984, when he sold it to four of his vice presidents. At its 1980s peak, RMN was producing everything from matching earring-and-necklace sets to pearl strands and Austrian crystal pieces, sold nationwide through mall counters and department stores.

The trademark is currently held by Roman & Sunstone, LLC. What makes any RMN piece collectible today isn't rarity in the dramatic sense — the company made a lot of jewelry — it's documentation. American costume jewelry has a bad habit of shedding its maker's marks over time. Hang tags get cut off, stamps wear down, and pieces end up in bins labeled "unsigned 1980s." A strand that still carries its original paper tag, intact and legible, is a little time capsule: proof of who made it, roughly when, and the context in which it was sold.

This one was bought new by a teenager in the 1980s — no dramatic story, just a well-made everyday pearl strand that was cared for properly and put away when fashion moved on. Now it comes back around, with its tag still telling the truth about where it came from.

Materials Simulated glass or acrylic pearls hand-knotted on cord, silver-tone base metal lobster claw clasp and extender chain, original paper hang tag
Care Store flat in a soft pouch — beads pressing together damages the pearlescent coating. Keep away from perfume and hairspray. Never submerge. The original hang tag is paper; handle it gently and keep dry.

If you spent any time near a department-store jewelry counter in the 1980s, you probably handled something made by The Roman Company. Founded in St. Louis in 1953 by Melvin Roman, RMN grew into one of America's most widely distributed costume jewelry houses — pearls, brooches, matching sets, and Austrian crystal pieces sold through mall counters and department stores nationwide. This single strand is a clean example of what RMN did well. Graduated simulated pearls, white and cream with a soft luminous coating, rise from smaller beads near the clasp to a fuller center. Each bead is hand-knotted on cord — the same stringing method used on fine pearls, applied here to well-made costume work. It protects the beads from rubbing and lets the strand drape properly on the neck. The clasp is a silver-tone lobster claw with a little extender chain for flexible sizing. And here's the part that makes this one special: the original RMN hang tag is still attached and clearly legible. For anyone who collects American costume jewelry, that small paper tag is the difference between an unknown strand and a documented piece. Provenance: Purchased new by its original owner as a teenager in the 1980s — likely from a mall jewelry counter, exactly where RMN pieces were sold. Kept carefully all these years. Condition: Excellent. The pearl coating is bright and consistent across every bead, no chipping or dulling. Knots are tight and even. Clasp works smoothly with only the lightest age-toning on the hardware. No broken beads, no restringing, no repairs.
