Vintage Sterling Silver & Brass Dangle Earrings — ATI Taxco Mixed Metal, Hammered Rings

Estimated 1990s–2000s · Taxco, Mexico

Taxco Modernist, Mixed Metal

These earrings bear the stamp of ATI — Athra Trading Inc. — a Taxco, Mexico workshop that produced modernist sterling silver jewelry through the 1990s and 2000s. Taxco has been Mexico's silver capital since William Spratling established his first workshop there in the 1930s, reviving a colonial-era craft and launching an artisan tradition that continues today. The mixed-metal technique here — combining sterling silver with brass in a single piece — connects to the metales casados ("married metals") tradition pioneered by the Los Castillo workshop, one of Taxco's most celebrated studios. ATI carried that vocabulary forward in a modernist key: clean geometric forms, hammered surfaces, and the warm two-tone interplay of silver and brass that has become a hallmark of Taxco's later production.

Materials .925 sterling silver and hammered brass. Three concentric open oval rings in alternating metals suspended from sterling silver French hook ear wires. All surfaces hand-hammered with an organic, artisanal texture.
Care Avoid liquid silver dips or chemical cleaners — they are too harsh for brass. Use a soft polishing cloth for gentle cleaning. Store in a dry pouch or lined box to slow tarnish. If the brass darkens, a soft cloth with a touch of lemon juice will restore warmth without affecting the silver.

These move. That's the first thing you'll notice. Three concentric open rings — brass, silver, brass — nested inside each other and connected loosely enough that each one swings on its own. The effect is somewhere between kinetic sculpture and jewelry, and it works beautifully at the ear. The rings are organic ovals, not perfect circles, with a deliberate hammered texture across every surface. That irregularity is the whole point — it's what gives them a handmade, modernist quality that machine-stamped jewelry can't touch. The outer ring measures approximately 2" tall, making these genuine statement earrings without tipping into costume territory. Sterling silver French hook ear wires keep things secure and comfortable.

About the Maker

ATI — Athra Trading Inc. — was a Taxco, Mexico workshop producing modernist sterling silver jewelry. Taxco has been Mexico's silver capital since William Spratling set up shop there in the 1930s and essentially launched an entire artisan tradition. ATI sits in the solid middle of that world: a recognized workshop with consistent quality and a real understanding of material. These are stamped "ATI 925," "MEXICO," and "BRASS" — all present and legible.

The Mixed-Metal Tradition

The combination of sterling silver and brass in a single piece isn't just an aesthetic choice — it connects to a technique the Taxco workshops call metales casados, or "married metals." The Los Castillo workshop pioneered this approach, and it's been part of the Taxco vocabulary ever since. The warm gold of the hammered brass against the cool of the sterling creates a two-tone contrast that plays well with just about everything. These earrings don't ask you to choose between gold and silver. They settled that argument for you.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. No damage, no repairs, no missing parts. The sterling and brass both carry a natural patina that's developed over the years — the kind that gives mixed-metal jewelry its depth. You could polish them bright if that's your preference, but honestly, they look better with a little life on them.

Care

Mixed-metal jewelry needs a gentle touch. Sterling silver and brass age at different rates and respond to different cleaners, so skip the dip-and-dunk silver polish — it's too harsh for the brass. A soft polishing cloth is your best friend here. Store them in a dry place, ideally in a small pouch or lined box to slow tarnish. If the brass darkens more than you'd like over time, a little lemon juice on a cloth will bring it back without bothering the silver.
