Vintage Hand-Painted Floral Coupe Bowl — 10" Mid-Century Ceramic
Mid-Century (1940s–1960s)
Hand-Painted Floral
Someone painted this bowl by hand, one brushstroke at a time. You can see the whole small ritual of it: the flowers outlined first in black, like a drawing, then filled with washes of color that slip past the lines here and there the way real brushwork does. A crimson dahlia anchors the center, with blue pansies, a yellow daisy, green leaves, and tan seed pods fanning toward a plain rim finished with a single yellow line. There's no signature anywhere. We don't know whose hand did this, and we've made our peace with that — the anonymity is part of what makes it feel human.
It comes from an estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina, a home that kept a handmade thing like this for decades rather than trading it for something newer. That says something about the people who lived with it. A shallow bowl like this was meant to be used — fruit on the counter, a salad on the table, or just its own painted garden in the center of a room. Mid-century by its look, and lovely still.
