Studio Pottery Blue Leaf Pitcher — 9" Hand-Thrown Stoneware with Slip-Trailed Leaves
Studio Pottery, late 20th century

Some pieces were made to be admired from a distance. This one was made to be used, and it's better for it. It's a hand-thrown stoneware pitcher, about nine inches tall, with a globular body, a pinched spout, and a pulled loop handle that arches up with an easy confidence. Stylized leaves wander across it in raised, slip-trailed lines you can feel with a fingertip, filled with a mottled blue that runs from slate to cornflower against a soft oatmeal ground. The throwing rings inside tell you the rest: a potter sat at a wheel and drew this up by hand, one at a time.
It comes to us from an estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina, where it clearly earned its keep. You can picture it in the ordinary rituals — catching the morning light on a windowsill, holding cream at the table, or gathered up with a handful of stems cut from the yard. That's the quiet gift of an honest, handmade vessel: it doesn't ask to be special, so it ends up being exactly that. There's no maker's mark and no signature, just the work of an anonymous studio potter who knew what they were doing. One of a kind, with the small imperfections that only come from being made — and used — by human hands.
