A flutter of butterflies drifts across crisp white porcelain — a green-and-yellow swallowtail, a little blue one, a spot of magenta, and one big soft lavender beauty — all threading through trailing vines and tiny orange blossoms. This is Avon's "Butterfly Fantasy," made in Brazil in 1979 and hand-decorated with a fine line of 22K gold around the rim. Just under 4½ inches across, so it's exactly the right size to catch your rings at the end of the day.

Avon introduced its Butterfly Fantasy line in the late 1970s: fine porcelain giftware — dishes, eggs, and bells — produced in Brazil and hand-decorated, each rimmed in a fine line of 22K gold. This small dish carries the full backstamp and the 1979 date, along with a scatter of hand-painted butterflies drifting among trailing vines and tiny orange blossoms. There is real gold on the rim, drawn in one clean line, and the painting shows the small, human variations that tell you a person did the work rather than a machine.

It came to us from an estate in Wake Forest, North Carolina, from a collector who had relocated to the area from Long Island, New York — small treasures kept with the care that careful people give them. Marked for decorative use only, it was made to be seen rather than served on: a ring dish at the bedside, a catch-all for earrings and cufflinks, or a miniature plate stood upright on a little easel where the butterflies can be admired.

They drift among slender leaves, thin curling vines, and little orange blossoms scattered like an afterthought. It's a busy little scene for a dish under 4½ inches across, and every wing was painted by hand. This is Avon's "Butterfly Fantasy," and the back tells the whole story: fine porcelain, produced in Brazil exclusively for Avon, hand-decorated with 22K gold, dated 1979. That late-'70s Avon giftware — the dishes, the eggs, the little bells — is remembered fondly by the people who collected it, and it's easy to see why.
