Mark Hewitt has potted in Pittsboro, North Carolina since 1983. English-born, he apprenticed under Michael Cardew, placing him squarely in the Bernard Leach line of English country pottery, and he works in wood-fired, salt-glazed stoneware from local clay. He is a living, widely collected potter and very much part of the North Carolina pottery tradition that runs centuries deep in that part of the state. This vase came from Mark Hewitt's workshop, as evidenced by his impressed circular monogram on the base — the personal mark his pottery has used since the mid-1990s — along with an impressed firing number.
It came to us from a North Carolina estate, one of several Mark Hewitt salt-glazed pieces a collector had gathered over the years. The salt glaze does what salt glaze does best: a speckled cream-and-buff ground with warm orange-tan flashing where the flame and the salt found it, so no two pots come out alike. You can read the work of the hand in it — throwing rings circling the inside, a footring left honestly raw. There is real pleasure in owning a pot from a celebrated, still-working potter, made in a salt-glaze tradition that goes back centuries.
