Late 20th Century Crystal / Glass, Lead Crystal Excellent
ETSY-VR-0132
It's a flag caught mid-wave, cut from solid Waterford lead crystal — the canton a block of deep diamond-cut hobnail that throws light in every direction, the stripes polished into rolling waves, the trailing edge serrated like cloth snapping in a breeze. Frosted into the star field is the official U.S. Navy seal: the eagle on its anchor, ringed by rope, "UNITED STATES NAVY" reading clear around the roundel. The cursive Waterford signature is acid-etched into the lower-right face. This one belonged to a Navy veteran — a sailor who enlisted out of Puerto Rico in 1968 — and it comes to us from a North Carolina estate.
  • Maker: Genuine Waterford crystal, confirmed by the etched cursive signature on the lower-right face
  • Form: Waving American flag in solid cut lead crystal — substantial and heavy in the hand
  • Detail: Intaglio (frosted, recessed) U.S. Navy seal etched into the diamond-cut canton
  • Cut work: Hobnail star block, polished wave stripes, serrated fluttering edges that catch the light
  • Size: Approximately 5 inches on the long side
  • Provenance: From a North Carolina estate; belonged to a U.S. Navy veteran who enlisted out of Puerto Rico in 1968
Condition: Presents excellent — no visible chips, cracks, or clouding; cut edges crisp and the etching sharp.

Waterford Crystal U.S. Navy Waving Flag — Intaglio Navy Seal, Signed Cut Lead Crystal, Approx. 5"

Late 20th Century

Americana — Military Commemorative

This Waterford crystal flag comes to us from a North Carolina estate, where it belonged to a United States Navy veteran — a sailor who enlisted out of Puerto Rico in 1968. It is the kind of piece kept on a shelf and meant something: a small, solid commemoration of real service, the sort measured in years and in distance from home. We have kept the sailor unnamed out of respect; what we can tell you is honest and worth honoring.

Waterford has long rendered patriotic and military commemoratives in its signature cut lead crystal. This one takes the form of a waving American flag — the stars a block of deep diamond-hobnail cut, the stripes polished into rolling waves, the trailing edge serrated like cloth in the wind. Frosted intaglio into the canton is the official U.S. Navy seal: an eagle on an anchor inside a rope-bordered roundel reading "UNITED STATES NAVY." The classic cursive Waterford signature is acid-etched into the lower-right face, confirming the maker.

Materials Solid cut lead crystal with a diamond-hobnail canton, polished wave stripes, and an intaglio-etched U.S. Navy seal; acid-etched cursive Waterford signature.
Care Dust with a soft, dry or barely damp lint-free cloth. Hand wash gently in lukewarm water if needed; avoid the dishwasher and sudden temperature changes. Handle the cut edges with care.

Some pieces you have to hold to understand. This is one of them. It's an American flag rendered in solid Waterford lead crystal, frozen in mid-wave — and it has the heft you'd expect from the name. The canton, the block where the stars belong, is cut in deep diamond hobnail that scatters light the moment it moves. The stripes are polished into long, rolling waves. The trailing edge is serrated, cut to look like cloth snapping in the wind. Set it near a window and it does the rest of the work itself. Frosted into the star field — intaglio, recessed and matte against all that brilliance — is the official seal of the United States Navy: the eagle perched on its anchor, framed by a rope border, "UNITED STATES NAVY" reading around the roundel. It's the kind of detail that tells you this wasn't a gift-shop souvenir. And the maker confirms it: the cursive Waterford signature is acid-etched into the lower-right face, the classic script mark, exactly where it should be. This is genuine Waterford, not a look-alike. It belonged to a Navy veteran — a sailor who enlisted in the Navy out of Puerto Rico in 1968 — and it reaches us from a North Carolina estate. We mention that plainly, because it matters. This piece marked real service, the kind measured in years and distance from home. Whoever carried this earned the right to a little crystal in their honor, and we'd like to see it kept by someone who reads it the same way.
