Mid-Century (1940s–1960s) Art Glass Excellent
HDRV-VR-0024
A small hand-blown vase in shaded cobalt glass — the kind of piece that quietly turns a windowsill into something worth pausing over. The color is nearly clear at its ruffled rim and deepens to a rich sapphire blue at the foot, with a soft optic swirl winding through the body and a hand-crimped, pie-crust lip. It came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate.
  • Hand-blown art glass — shaded cobalt, from pale rim to deep blue base
  • Optic swirl body with a hand-pulled, crimped ruffle rim
  • Rough pontil on the base and fine seed bubbles in the glass — true blown-glass tells
  • Small scale — approximately 6" tall x 4.5" across; right for a single stem or a few blooms
  • Unmarked, in the tradition of mid-century American art glass
Condition: Excellent — clear and bright, with an intact rim and no chips or cracks. The rough pontil and the gentle variation in the glass are the marks of the hand that made it.

Vintage Hand-Blown Cobalt Art Glass Vase — 6" Shaded Blue Optic Swirl with Ruffled Rim

Mid-Century

Hand-Blown Art Glass

This little cobalt vase came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, part of a home that clearly leaned toward color and the way light moves through a room. It is hand-blown, and you can read the maker's hand in it — the pulled, crimped rim, the soft optic swirl winding up the body, and the fine seed bubbles caught in the glass. The color is its quietest trick: nearly clear at the ruffled lip, it deepens gather by gather into a rich sapphire cobalt at the foot.

It carries no signature, but everything about it — the shaded blue, the twisted optic, the rough pontil left on the base — belongs to the tradition of American hand-blown art glass made through the middle of the last century, the kind once turned out by the small glasshouses of West Virginia. We place it there by its making rather than a mark. At barely six inches, it is the right scale for a single stem, a few violets, or simply a windowsill where it can do what it was built to do — hold the light.

Materials Hand-blown glass with a swirled optic body, shaded cobalt coloring, a hand-crimped ruffle rim, and a rough pontil base.
Care Hand wash in warm water with mild soap and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid sudden temperature changes and the dishwasher. Handle the thin ruffled rim gently.

Some glass is made to disappear into a room. This little vase is made to catch it — the light, the eye, a slow second look. Hand-blown in shaded cobalt, it holds a color that shifts as it climbs: cool and nearly clear at the crimped rim, then deepening into a saturated sapphire blue at the foot. The making is written all over it. A soft optic swirl spirals up the body, the rim has been pulled into a hand-crimped, pie-crust ruffle, and fine seed bubbles hang suspended in the walls of the glass. Turn it over and the base still wears its rough pontil scar — the mark left where the piece was held on the blowpipe, and the clearest sign that no machine touched it. It carries no signature, but everything about it belongs to the tradition of American hand-blown art glass made through the middle of the last century — the shaded blue, the twisted optic, the tooled rim. We place it there by how it was made rather than by a mark. It came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, part of a home that clearly leaned toward color and the way light moves through a room. At roughly six inches tall, it asks for very little — a single stem, a handful of violets, or nothing at all but a bright window to stand in.
