Highlights
- Vintage celadon-glazed ceramic urn vase on a footed pedestal base
- Soft cream-to-sage celadon glaze with pronounced all-over crackle (craquelure) finish
- Wide relief band of acanthus leaf and scroll motifs around the upper body
- Warm ochre clay visible through thinner glaze on relief details, adding depth and contrast
- Footed pedestal base with smooth, glossy glaze
- Likely mid-to-late 20th century; stylistically consistent with Siam celadon or Western celadon-inspired decorative ware
- No visible maker's marks
- Best suited for decorative display — a beautiful accent for a console, mantel, bookshelf, or dining table
Condition
Good vintage condition. There is a small chip at the rim with a fine hairline crack extending from that area downward through the relief band (see photos). The crackle pattern across the body is intentional and characteristic of celadon ware — it is a feature, not a flaw. Celadon-Inspired Decorative Ceramic, East-West Ornamental
This celadon urn came out of the same Hobbesville, North Carolina estate that's produced several of our favorite recent finds. The woman who built that collection had a gift for mixing categories — fine jewelry alongside art glass alongside ceramics like this one — and everything she chose had a certain weight to it. Not necessarily physical weight, though this piece has that too. More the sense that she'd looked at a hundred things and picked the one worth keeping.
The vase is mid-to-late 20th century, unmarked, with a soft cream-to-sage crackle glaze over a footed pedestal base. A wide band of acanthus leaves and scrollwork wraps the upper body in raised relief — where the glaze thins over those high points, warm ochre clay shows through, giving the piece a depth that flat-glazed ceramics can't touch. The all-over craquelure is intentional, part of the celadon tradition where controlled crazing has been prized for centuries.
We'll be straightforward about condition: there's a small chip at the rim with a hairline crack extending down through the relief band. It's visible in the photos, and we've priced accordingly. The piece is best for display rather than holding water. That said, the flaw doesn't diminish what makes this vase worth having — genuine character, and it looks right at home on a shelf or mantel.
