Here's a little Christmas that never got the chance to happen — and that's the good news. This Empress "Linen Weave" tablecloth is still sealed in its original factory cellophane, exactly as it left the shelf sometime in the mid-1980s. The print is pure holiday cheer: rows of red candles with warm flames, ringed by white-and-red holly berries and small green leaves, all on a bright kelly-green ground. It measures 60" x 86" oblong, sized to dress a table for six to eight. And no, it isn't linen — "linen weave" is the maker's name for the texture, a poly-cotton blend with that pleasant linen-look surface.

Vintage 1980s Empress Christmas Tablecloth — 60x86 Oblong, Candles & Holly on Kelly Green, Unused in Package

1980s

Vintage Christmas Table Linen

This tablecloth comes from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate — the kind of well-kept Southern home where the holidays were planned for long before the calendar caught up. Christmas things were bought in their season, when they turned up and the price was right, then wrapped and put away with care for a later year. Somewhere in a drawer, this one waited: an Empress Christmas tablecloth, still sealed in its original cellophane, set aside for a holiday table that hadn't quite arrived yet.

The pattern tells you plenty about the house it kept — cheerful and unfussy, red candles and holly berries scattered across a bright green ground, nothing precious about it. This was a cloth meant for a real table, for a room full of people and passed dishes and a little spilled gravy nobody worried over. It never got that chance. It stayed sealed, brand new, from the mid-1980s straight through to now. Somewhere along the way the plan changed, as plans do, and it simply kept waiting. We rather like that it did. It means the cloth that's found its way to us is exactly as it was made — unopened, unused, still holding out for the right Christmas. That Christmas can finally be yours.

Materials 65% polyester / 35% cotton "linen weave," with a permanent-press and soil-release finish. Screen-printed all-over Christmas design. Made in U.S.A.
Care Machine wash warm with a mild detergent. No bleach, and wash dark colors separately. Tumble dry warm, removing promptly. No ironing needed — the permanent-press finish keeps it smooth.

Some things get bought for a Christmas that's always a little further down the road. This one came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate — a well-kept Southern home where the holidays were clearly planned for well ahead of time. Festive things were bought in season, wrapped up, and put away carefully for later. This tablecloth was one of them: tucked in a drawer, still sealed in its factory cellophane, waiting on the right Christmas to come around. It waited a good long while. It's an Empress "Linen Weave" oblong tablecloth from the mid-1980s, and the print is exactly the kind of homey holiday cheer that decade did so well — rows of little red candles with warm flames, ringed by white-and-red holly berries and small green leaves, all set against a bright kelly-green ground. One honest note worth making: despite the "Linen Weave" name, this isn't linen. That's the maker's term for the textured, linen-look surface. The fabric itself is a 65% polyester / 35% cotton blend with a no-iron permanent-press and soil-release finish — which, if you've ever wrestled a real linen cloth with an iron the morning of a dinner, you may come to see as a feature. Empress once offered matching napkins, though those didn't come along with this one. At 60" x 86" oblong, it's sized to dress a table for six to eight, with an easy 6–8" drop for casual settings. It's made in the U.S.A. and carries the "Crafted with Pride in U.S.A." emblem. And since we're bringing it out during Christmas in July, consider it a head start — the kind of thing you set aside now so the holiday table is one less thing to think about come December.
