A kimono caught mid-gesture — sleeves spread wide, the front falling open to show the inner robe, the whole thing standing upright on two slim pins like something lifted from a museum case. The outer robe wears butterflies drifting through irises, with reedy lines and a whiplash Art Nouveau curl to the banding. The inner layer is a quiet field of tiny raised blossoms, pebbled and soft to the eye. The finish is the good part: a dark bronzed, verdigris-green patina with coppery highlights riding every raised detail. It has the look of a carved and bronzed antique — rendered, honestly, in molded resin and hand-finished by someone who knew what they were after.
  • Material: molded resin, hand-finished to read as carved and bronzed metal — the look of an antique, plainly stated
  • Form: open kimono silhouette — wide sleeves, butterflies among irises on the outer robe, an allover blossom field on the inner layer
  • Finish: dark bronzed verdigris-green patina with warm coppery highlights
  • Size: 19.5" tall x 9" wide x 3" deep
  • Mount: stands on a black plinth, set on twin steel display pins
Condition: Excellent from our inspection — crisp relief, an even finish, and a solid mount that stands securely. The lightly aged surface is intentional, part of the look, and it wears it well.

Sculptural Kimono on a Stand — Bronzed Molded Resin Robe with Butterflies & Irises

Later 20th Century

Decorative Kimono Sculpture, Art Nouveau motifs

This piece came to us from an estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina — the collection of someone who spent a lifetime gathering fine vases, curios, and figurines, and clearly had an eye for the ones with presence. It's a kimono rendered as a standing sculpture: the robe thrown open to show its inner layer, sleeves spread wide, mounted upright on two slim pins set into a black plinth, the way you'd display something behind museum glass. The outer robe carries butterflies moving through irises, with reedy lines and a whiplash Art Nouveau curl to the banding. Where the robe falls open, the inner layer shifts to a soft, pebbled field of tiny raised blossoms. Over all of it sits a dark bronzed, verdigris-green patina, coppery where the relief rises.

We'll be straight about what it is: molded resin, hand-finished to carry the look of a carved and bronzed antique. Not metal, not an old artifact — resin, and we'd rather say so plainly than dress it up. What it lacks in age it makes up in presence. This is the kind of object a lifelong curio collector gives real shelf space to, not because it's precious but because it's good to look at. Likely later twentieth century. We won't guess at a decade.

Materials Molded resin, hand-finished with a bronzed, verdigris-green patina and coppery highlights. Mounted on a black wood/composite plinth with twin steel display pins.
Care Dust with a soft, dry cloth, or one barely damp if it needs more. Skip household cleaners and solvents — they can dull the finish. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun to hold the patina.

Some objects earn their space by standing still and looking like they mean it. This one does. It's a kimono rendered as a sculpture — the robe thrown open, sleeves stretched to their full width, the skirt flaring just slightly at the hem. It stands upright on two slim steel pins set into a black plinth, the way a museum mounts an artifact it wants you to walk around. At 19.5 inches tall, it holds a shelf or a bit of wall the way a good piece should. The decoration rewards a second look. Across the outer robe, butterflies move through a stand of irises, threaded with slender reed lines and a whiplash curl of Art Nouveau banding. Where the robe falls open, the inner layer changes register entirely — an allover field of tiny raised florettes, plum or chrysanthemum blossoms scattered edge to edge, giving that surface a soft, pebbled texture you want to run a thumb across. Over all of it lies a dark bronzed, verdigris-green patina, with warm coppery highlights catching wherever the relief rises. It's the coloring of an old bronze that's spent a century minding its own business. Here's the honest part, said plainly: it's molded resin. Hand-finished, and finished well, to carry the look of a carved and bronzed antique — but resin, not metal, not an artifact dug out of anywhere. We'd rather you know that up front and enjoy it for exactly what it is, which is a genuinely striking decorative object. It came to us from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, the collection of someone who spent a lifetime gathering fine vases, curios, and figurines. This is the kind of piece a collector like that gives real shelf space to — not because it's precious, but because it's good to look at, and it holds up to looking. Likely later twentieth century; we won't pin it to a decade we can't prove.

Condition: Excellent from our inspection — the relief is crisp, the bronzed verdigris finish is intact and even, and the twin-pin mount is solid, standing securely on its plinth. The lightly distressed surface is intentional, part of the aged-artifact look rather than any kind of wear. No chips or cracks noted.
