The bodies are fluted and melon-ribbed, standing on softly scalloped feet, with a swan-neck handle on the creamer and bright gold gilt tracing every rim and edge. Royal Tara Irish Bone China Tara Brooch Sugar Bowl & Creamer Set — Handmade in Galway

Circa 1980s–1990s

Celtic Revival Irish Bone China

The Tara Brooch is one of early medieval Ireland's great survivors — an 8th-century penannular brooch of silver, gold, and glass whose intricate detail still astonishes. Royal Tara, the fine-china house in Galway, adapted that ancient design as its signature pattern, rendering the jeweled ring in gilt line work on handmade Irish bone china. This two-piece set — a sugar bowl and matching creamer — carries the brooch on one side of each piece, its ring studded with red, cobalt, and teal enamel cabochons and finished with bright gold along every rim and handle.

Royal Tara china was the kind brought out for Sunday and for company, or carried home from a trip to the west of Ireland as a keepsake of Galway. This set came to us from a Virginia estate, where it had clearly been kept as good china — the gilding is bright and the enamel colors crisp. It is a small, warm piece of Irish craft, ready for the tea tray or the good shelf of the china cabinet.

Materials Irish fine bone china, handmade in Galway; gold gilt rims and handles; Tara Brooch decoration in gilt with red, cobalt, and teal enamel jewel cabochons.
Care Hand wash only in warm water with mild soap; dry promptly with a soft cloth. Avoid the dishwasher, microwave, and abrasive scrubbers to protect the gold gilt and enamel decoration.

The pattern here has a real story behind it. The Tara Brooch is one of the great survivors of early medieval Ireland — an 8th-century penannular brooch worked in silver, gold, and glass, so fine in its detail that the people who made it clearly had steady hands and time on their side. Royal Tara borrowed that ancient design for its most recognizable china, and you can see why they kept coming back to it. The brooch is drawn in gold line work on one side of each piece, its ring studded with little cabochon "jewels" in red, cobalt blue, and a deep teal green. It's a nod to a thousand years of Irish craft, sitting quietly on a sugar bowl. Both pieces are Irish fine bone china, handmade in Galway — the kind of thing that traveled home in a suitcase or came down through a family as the good china, brought out for Sunday and for company. The forms are lovely to handle: fluted, melon-ribbed panels that catch the light, gently scalloped feet, and a graceful swan-neck handle on the creamer. Bright gold gilt runs along every rim, the spout, and the handles, and it's held its shine. The backstamp on each reads plainly — handmade in Galway, Ireland, under the gold Royal Tara crown. Two pieces convey together: the sugar bowl and its matching creamer. Whether it's set out for St. Patrick's, kept for Celtic-heritage entertaining, or simply given the good shelf in the china cabinet, this is a set that earns its place. "There are no strangers here; only friends you haven't yet met" — Ireland has a way of putting it, and a table set with a little Galway china tends to prove the point. Details
