A matched pair of little footed cups, and the two-tone glaze is the whole story: soft matte black on the outside, bright glossy white within, each one lifted on a neat white foot ring. No pattern, no gilding, nothing to fuss over. They sit squarely in the Japanese sake- and tea-cup tradition — wide-mouthed and rounded, big enough to read as guinomi, the larger sake style. Pour tea, matcha, espresso, or set them out for a dip or a votive. They earn their keep.

Matte Black Footed Cups, Set of 2 — Glossy White Interior, Sake & Tea Form

Contemporary

Minimalist Sake & Tea Cups

These two little cups came from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, and they carry the feel of the quiet part of the morning — the unhurried pour before the day gets loud. A matched pair, set out for two: a small daily ceremony that asks for nothing more than a kettle and a few minutes of stillness.

The form is honest and the glaze does the talking. Soft matte black outside, bright glossy white within, each cup lifted on a clean white foot ring — wide-mouthed and rounded in the hand, squarely in the Japanese sake- and tea-cup tradition and large enough to read as guinomi, the bigger sake style. They are unmarked, with no maker's mark or country stamp, so we describe the style rather than a signature. Versatile by nature, they hold sake, tea, matcha, or a short pull of espresso just as easily as they steady a votive after dark.

Materials Glazed ceramic. Soft matte black exterior over a bright glossy white interior, each cup finished with a neat white glazed foot ring. Unmarked.
Care Hand-wash in warm, soapy water and dry promptly. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the glaze. Not recommended for microwave or dishwasher; a gentle hand keeps both glazes bright for years.

Some things belong to the quiet part of the morning — the pour before the day gets loud, the few minutes that are yours before anyone needs anything. This pair of cups came from a Hobbsville, North Carolina estate, and it's easy to picture them in exactly that role: two cups, set out for two, a small daily ceremony that asked for nothing but a kettle and a little stillness. The form is honest and the glaze does all the talking. Matte black on the outside, soft to the eye, and then that bright glossy white waiting inside — a nice bit of surprise every time you look down into one. Each cup rests on a clean white foot ring, wide at the mouth and rounded in the hand, squarely in the Japanese sake- and tea-cup tradition. They're large enough to read as guinomi, the bigger sake style, which is a polite way of saying they'll hold whatever you ask of them. And they will hold plenty. Sake, sure. But also tea, matcha, a short pull of espresso, a spoonful of dipping sauce at the table, or a votive throwing light against that white interior after dark. Minimal, two-tone, and quietly useful — the kind of pair that finds a spot on the shelf and keeps getting reached for.
