Cool, rhythmic, and quietly magnetic — this hand-blown art glass vase wraps soft blue and white threads in broad diagonal sweeps around a graceful trumpet form. The swirl technique, reminiscent of the Italian mezza filigrana tradition, creates an effect that feels both fluid and structured — like ribbons of sky caught mid-turn. Look closely at the white bands and you'll see the telltale texture of the technique: each white "stripe" is actually a bundle of fine individual glass threads, stretched and spread during blowing into delicate, feathery striations. It's the kind of detail you only get from hand-worked cane glass. At 8 inches tall with a wide flared mouth and clear footed pedestal base, it has a presence that's equal parts airy and grounded.

Blue & White Swirl Art Glass Vase -- 8" Hand-Blown Footed Trumpet Vase

Contemporary Artisan

Hand-Blown Art Glass, Filigrana Tradition

From an estate in Hobbesville, North Carolina, where a lifelong collector kept the kind of home you wanted to walk through slowly. She'd worked in fine jewelry for years and had a collector's instinct that extended well past the jewelry case — into glass, ceramics, antiques, anything that rewarded a careful look.

This trumpet vase is hand-blown art glass, eight inches tall, with blue and white swirl threads pulled through in a filigrana-style technique. The clear footed pedestal base grounds the whole piece, and the pontil is ground and polished — a finishing detail that tells you the maker cared about the underside as much as the profile. Unsigned, likely a studio or artisan piece.

Condition is excellent. Hold it up to a window and the light moves through those threads in a way that reminds you why people have been blowing glass for two thousand years.

Materials Hand-blown art glass with embedded blue and white swirl thread pattern on clear glass, applied clear glass footed pedestal base, ground and polished pontil mark on base
Care Hand wash only with lukewarm water and mild soap. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not place in the dishwasher. If using as a flower vase, change the water regularly to prevent mineral buildup at the waterline. Display on a stable, level surface — the footed pedestal base is sturdy but glass is glass. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads which will scratch the polished surface.

There is a particular kind of beauty in the way glass holds movement. Not frozen, exactly — more like suspended. The blue and white threads in this vase spiral around the body in broad, crossing diagonals, each line laid down individually while the glass was still hot and turning on the blowpipe. The result is a pattern that feels woven rather than painted — the kind of thing you could look at for a long time and still find a new line to follow. The technique is reminiscent of mezza filigrana, an Italian glassmaking tradition with roots in 16th-century Murano, where colored glass threads are embedded in clear glass and twisted as the piece is blown. Whether this vase was made in Italy, in a studio influenced by that tradition, or somewhere else entirely, the craftsmanship speaks for itself. The threads are even, the spirals are confident, and the walls are thick enough to tell you someone knew what they were doing. Look closely at the white bands and a beautiful detail emerges: each one is not a single solid stripe, but a bundle of many fine individual glass threads — stretched and spread during blowing into delicate, feathery striations. This is the signature texture of filigrana cane work, where pre-made rods of bundled white glass threads are picked up on the hot gather and then expanded as the piece is blown to its final form. The blue bands, by contrast, read as more solid and saturated. The interplay between the two — the airy, striated whites and the deeper blues — gives the piece a layered quality that rewards a closer look. The form is classic: a trumpet shape, widening from a narrow waist to a generous flared mouth that invites a handful of garden roses or a few stems of dried lavender. The footed pedestal base in clear glass anchors the piece visually and gives it a slight lift — the kind of quiet design choice that separates a well-made vase from a merely decorative one. Flip it over and you'll find a polished pontil mark, ground smooth on the base — the final step in a hand-blown piece, and your proof that this was shaped at the end of a blowpipe, not pressed in a mold. At 8 inches tall, it's the kind of piece that works on a mantel, a console table, a dining room sideboard, or a bathroom shelf where you want one beautiful thing. The blue is soft — closer to periwinkle than cobalt — and the white threads lighten the whole piece, giving it an almost nautical freshness. In bright light the glass catches and scatters, and the swirling lines seem to move. In softer light it quiets down to something cool and serene. The vase is unmarked — no maker's signature, no label, no sticker residue. That's common for unsigned studio art glass and imported artisan pieces. We won't guess at a maker, but we can tell you the quality is real. The weight, the polished pontil, the evenness of the threading — this was made by someone who understood their craft.
