Avon Liberty Bell Decanter Oland After Shave - Full 5 oz Amber Glass Bottle in Box - Vintage 1970s Americana Collectible

Early 1970s

Americana Figural Decanter

Avon produced this Liberty Bell decanter in the early 1970s, part of the figural-glass craze that turned the company's fragrances into collectible containers sold through its vast network of representatives. The bell is rendered in warm amber glass after the one in Philadelphia's Independence Hall, complete with the famous crack molded into the form and the foundry inscription "Pass and Stow / Philada / MDCCLIII" embossed around the crown. A black plastic yoke shaped like the bell's wooden headstock forms the cap.

Held here is Oland after shave, Avon's warm, woodsy men's fragrance. The original box survives, printed with Revolutionary-era illustrations and a panel recounting the bell's history and its "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land" inscription. A widely produced and much-loved piece of Bicentennial-era Americana, it carries fresh meaning as the country marks its 250th anniversary.

Materials Amber pressed glass bell with molded crack and embossed lettering; black plastic yoke cap that doubles as the closure.
Care Display away from direct sunlight to preserve the amber glass and box graphics. Dust the glass with a soft, dry cloth. Keep the box dry and handle gently at the worn corners.

There is something quietly charming about how faithfully Avon translated a national monument into a tabletop keepsake. This Liberty Bell decanter, produced in the early 1970s, captures the bell that hangs in Philadelphia's Independence Hall in warm amber pressed glass — the gentle flare of the rim, the encircling band of inscription, and even the famous diagonal crack, all molded directly into the form. Lean in and you can read "Pass and Stow / Philada / MDCCLIII" embossed across the crown, naming the foundry that recast the bell in 1753. Sitting atop the bell is a black plastic yoke shaped like the wooden headstock the real bell once hung from. It is more than decoration — the yoke is the cap, unscrewing to reveal the contents. This example is full of Oland after shave, Avon's warm, woodsy men's fragrance, and it still wears its original box. That box is part of the pleasure: printed with Revolutionary-era scenes of a mounted rider, soldiers, and the bell being carried through the streets, plus a panel recounting the bell's history and the "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land" inscription from Leviticus.

About Avon's Collectible Decanters

From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Avon turned its fragrances into figural glass — cars, animals, chess pieces, and patriotic forms like this one. These were widely produced and widely loved, sold through the company's legendary network of representatives. The Liberty Bell, with its Bicentennial-era patriotism, is a natural piece of Americana, and it lands with particular meaning as the country marks its 250th anniversary.
