Vintage HOMCO Old World Farmers Bisque Porcelain Figurine Pair — #1433

1970s–1980s

Old World figural pair, HOMCO Home Interiors

She had a wonderful eye, and a quiet patience for the small things that wear time well. The pieces in her cabinets were not chosen by accident — each had earned its place across years of looking, and choosing, and bringing home only what felt right.

This pair sat among them. HOMCO's Old World Farmers — Grandma with her basket of grapes, Grandpa on his stump with the shovel — a pair sentimental enough to be loved openly and unfussy enough to live alongside finer things without competing. They came home from a private estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina, where they had kept their place for a long time. We bring them forward now with care, and with thanks for the eye that saw them and gathered them in.

Materials Hand-painted bisque porcelain (unglazed). Cobalt blue underglaze mark with model number 1433 and artist's monogram on each base.
Care Display away from direct sun and humidity. Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Bisque is unglazed and porous — avoid water and household cleaners.

HOMCO called this pair "Old World Farmers" and gave them model number 1433 — but most people who lived with them just called them Grandma and Grandpa. They're a fixture of a particular kind of American household: the curio cabinet, the dining-room hutch, the long shelf above the sideboard where the little things that meant something quietly accumulated over the years. She sits with a wide woven basket cradled in her lap, the basket heaped with bunches of purple grapes and curling vine leaves. Her dress is a soft cream over a lavender skirt, with a dusty rose blouse and a kerchief knotted at her chin. The painter caught a small smile in the curve of her mouth — the look of someone resting for a moment on the cool side of the day's work. He sits across from her on the rough stump of a tree, one boot planted on the blade of an upturned shovel. His jacket is a chalky pale blue over a buff-colored vest and rolled shirt sleeves; his soft brimmed hat is a weathered olive-green; a pipe rests in one hand. The bisque finish — porcelain fired but left unglazed — gives both figures a soft, almost peach-skin texture that takes the light gently and never glares. Each base carries a hand-painted cobalt blue underglaze mark with the model number 1433 and a small artist's monogram. HOMCO (Home Interiors & Gifts of Texas) sourced the line from Taiwan in the 1970s and into the 1980s, when the company's home-party catalogs were a steady fixture in living rooms across the country. The 1433 pair is one of the more sought-after of the seated farmer figures — collectors look for them turning up complete. Highlights
