1970s Crystal / Glass Very Good
HABC-VR-0007
Avon's clear-glass tribute to the sixteenth president, issued in the early-to-mid 1970s and originally filled with four ounces of Wild Country after shave. Lincoln's familiar bearded likeness sits in a printed oval cartouche centered on the front face — a second portrait reads through the reverse — with embossed stars at the four corners and a brass-tone sphere cap topped by a gilt eagle finial, posed exactly as a flagpole eagle would be. The original stars-and-stripes presentation box is here too, and the bottle still holds most of its original aftershave, well above the fill line.

Highlights

  • Clear pressed-glass body with an embossed star at each of the four corners on both faces
  • Printed Lincoln portrait cartouche on the front in sepia and indigo, second portrait visible through the reverse
  • Brass-tone metal sphere cap topped with a gilt eagle finial — intact, seated, catches light beautifully
  • Original Avon Wild Country presentation box included — stars-and-stripes graphics, gold Great Seal medallion on one panel, full Lincoln biographical text on the reverse
  • Bottle is mostly full of the original Wild Country after shave (sold as a decorative collectible)
  • Approx. 5.5″ tall × 3″ wide × 2″ deep — sits naturally beside Avon's Washington Tribute as the patriotic pair Avon meant them to be
Condition: Bottle is excellent — clear glass with no chips or cracks, embossed corner stars sharp, both portrait cartouches bright and well-registered, eagle finial intact and seated correctly, cap snug. The original box shows honest shelf wear after fifty-some years — softened corners, surface scuffs and small losses along the red-and-white side panels, light tears at the top seam — but all four panels are intact and the graphics, including the full Avon descriptive text on the back panel, read cleanly.

Vintage Avon Abraham Lincoln Wild Country After Shave Decanter — Eagle Finial & Original Patriotic Box (Circa 1971–1975)

Circa 1971–1975

1970s Americana Figural Decanter

Avon's figural decanter program ran from the late 1960s into the early 1980s, and the early-'70s patriotic series — Lincoln, Washington, the Capitol, the Liberty Bell — was its most quietly ambitious moment. The Abraham Lincoln Bottle was issued circa 1971 through 1975, holding four fluid ounces of Wild Country after shave. Avon Products, Inc., based in New York, mass-produced the bottle through their direct-sales network; it was the kind of small, gift-shaped object that got bought for someone's father, set on a bathroom shelf, and saved.

The 1970s patriotic decanters arrived in the long run-up to America's Bicentennial, when brands were beginning, gently, to lean in. Avon (founded 1886 by David H. McConnell as the California Perfume Company) was 140 years old in 2026 — the same year America turned 250. This Lincoln came through with its original stars-and-stripes presentation box, its eagle finial intact and seated, and most of its original Wild Country still inside.

Materials Clear pressed-glass body with embossed star corners and printed portrait cartouches; brass-tone metal sphere cap topped with gilt eagle finial.
Care Display away from direct sunlight to keep the printed portraits and printed box graphics bright. Dust the glass with a soft dry cloth; keep the original box in stable, dry conditions.

The Find

Avon's figural decanter program ran from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, and the early-'70s patriotic series — Lincoln, Washington, the Capitol Building, the Liberty Bell — was its most quietly ambitious moment. Aftershave was the gift you bought your father; a tribute to the Great Emancipator was the wrapper Avon chose to put it in. This is the Abraham Lincoln Bottle, issued circa 1971 through 1975 with four fluid ounces of Wild Country after shave inside, and most of that aftershave is still here today. The body is clear pressed glass, rectangular, with an embossed star at each of the four corners on both faces. Centered on the front, a printed oval cartouche carries the familiar bearded Lincoln likeness — rendered in soft sepia and indigo, the same engraving language as a postage stamp — and a second portrait reads from the back, so the bottle works from either direction. The cap is a brass-tone metal sphere topped with a gilt eagle, wings spread, posed exactly as a flagpole finial would be. It catches afternoon light beautifully.

Two Anniversaries, One Founder

2026 is America's 250th and Avon's 140th. By the time the Lincoln Bottle reached suburban doorsteps in the early 1970s, the country was building toward its Bicentennial and brands were beginning, gently, to lean in. Avon — founded 1886 by David H. McConnell as the California Perfume Company — had been mass-producing figural bottles since the late 1960s, and their patriotic series was a natural fit for the moment: small, gift-shaped objects that lived on a thousand bathroom shelves and got saved, boxed, often unopened, for fifty years and counting. This one came through with its original box, its original eagle finial, and most of its original Wild Country still inside.

Condition

The bottle itself is in excellent condition. The clear glass is bright with no chips, cracks, or clouding; the embossed stars at the corners are crisp; both printed Lincoln portraits are bright and well-registered, with no rubbing or fade. The brass-tone sphere cap is intact and seated correctly, and the gilt eagle finial is firmly mounted. The cap remains snug; the original aftershave is still inside, and we have not opened it. The original box shows honest shelf wear consistent with fifty-plus years of household storage. The corners are softened. There are surface scuffs and small areas of paper loss along the red-and-white striped side panels, and there are light tears along the top seam. All four panels are intact and structurally sound — the stars-and-stripes graphics, the gold Great Seal medallion, and the full descriptive panel on the reverse (which reads "ABRAHAM LINCOLN / The sixteenth President of the United States of America. Called the 'Great Emancipator.'…") all read cleanly.
