1970s Glass Good
HABC-VR-0005
Avon's amber-glass tribute to the Capitol Building, made between 1970 and 1972 and originally filled with five ounces of Tribute aftershave. The dome is silver, the columns and pediments are crisply molded, and the original blue-and-white illustrated box is here too — softened at the corners but every bit as period as the bottle inside it. Highlights
  • Amber pressed glass body, silver-tone dome lid that unscrews to access the bottle
  • Original Avon Tribute box included — worn but intact, with the iconic blue sky and engraved Capitol illustration
  • Approx. 5.5" tall, 3" wide at the base — small enough for a shadow-box shelf, substantial enough to anchor a vignette
  • Empty; sold as a decorative collectible
Condition note: The Statue of Freedom figural cap that originally crowned the dome is missing — the threaded stem where she screws on is visible and undamaged, so a replacement topper from a parts bottle could restore her if you're inclined. Glass body is excellent with no chips or cracks. Box shows wear at the corners and edge seams. Priced for what's here: a beautifully detailed Capitol decanter and its original packaging, sold as-is.

Vintage Avon "The Capitol" Tribute Aftershave Decanter — Amber Glass with Original Box (1970–1972)

1970–1972

Avon Figural Decanter — Patriotic Series

Avon issued figural decanters by the dozen through the 1960s and 1970s, but the patriotic series — the Lincoln, the Washington, the Liberty Bell, and this Capitol — landed differently. Aftershave was the gift you bought your father, and a tribute to the Capitol Building was the wrapper Avon chose to put it in. The 1970–1972 Tribute issue originally held five fluid ounces of aftershave inside a press-molded amber-glass replica of the building.

The Statue of Freedom figural cap that crowned the dome is missing here, but the building below her is intact and beautifully detailed — fluted columns running the rotunda, deeper recesses for the pediments, the stepped tiers of the dome. The original blue-and-white illustrated Avon Tribute box is included as well, softened at the corners but every bit as period as the bottle inside it.

Materials Amber pressed glass body with crisp molded architectural detail; silver-tone plastic dome lid that unscrews to access the bottle. Empty.
Care Dust with a soft dry cloth. Hand-wash the empty bottle with mild soap and warm water if needed; do not submerge the silver-tone dome lid. Display out of direct sun to preserve the amber glass tone.

Avon's "The Capitol" decanter is one of those small, specific pieces of mid-century America that turns up in estate sales the way Coke trays and Reader's Digest hardbacks do — not rare exactly, but a piece of the country's domestic shelf-life. Avon issued figural decanters by the dozen through the 1960s and '70s, but the patriotic series — the Lincoln, the Washington, the Liberty Bell, and this one — landed differently. Aftershave was the gift you bought your father, and a tribute to the Capitol Building was the wrapper Avon chose to put it in. This is the 1970–1972 issue, originally filled with five fluid ounces of Tribute aftershave. The body is amber pressed glass, with the kind of crisp architectural detail that only a heavy press mold delivers — a row of fluted columns running the circumference of the rotunda, deeper recesses for the pediments and porticoes, the stepped tiers of the dome itself. The lid is silver-tone plastic, formed in the dome's image, and unscrews from the building so that the bottle could be filled and emptied through the neck below. There's a working glass screw thread inside that's still clean and undamaged. The original Avon box is included. It's the deep-blue version with the white-line engraving of the Capitol's east front and a sky printed in that particular early-'70s blue that turns up on Bicentennial-era ephemera everywhere. The corners have softened with age and there are scuffs along the edges, but the printed graphic is fully intact and reads beautifully. It belongs on a small shelf with other Americana — a Lincoln bust, a flag book, a porcelain eagle — or by itself on a writing desk where the amber catches afternoon light through the glass.

Condition

The Statue of Freedom figural cap that originally crowned the dome is missing. The threaded stem where she screws onto the dome is visible in the photos and is fully intact and undamaged — a replacement Freedom topper from a parts bottle could be sourced and screwed on if you wanted to make her whole again. The amber glass body is in excellent condition: no chips, no cracks, no clouding, with all the molded architectural detail crisp and bright. The silver-tone dome shows light surface wear consistent with age but no flaking. The original box shows wear at the corners and edges with some softening of the cardboard, but the printed illustration is intact and the box is structurally sound. Priced as-is, reflecting the missing topper.
